Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): At 9:00 pm on 3 May 2020, at Diamond Island, Tonle Bassac commune, Chamkarmon district, Phnom Penh, police arrested two of five gangsters, after they allegedly attempted to extort 200,000 yuan from a Chinese businessman, threatening him with a K59 pistol.

The victim, Lich Chin, a 34-year-old businessman from Ung Cheng Company in Borey Ely in Diamond Island, Sangkat Tonle Bassac, Chamkar Mon district, filed a complaint against the gangsters for using a firearm to extort 200,000 yuan* from him. He refused to send the money and was held prisoner in the room.

The main suspect was identified as Wen Tai, a 35-year-old Chinese national, with no known occupation or residence in Cambodia. Police confiscated a K59 pistol containing seven bullets. After questioning, police temporarily detained the suspects, and prepared the case for Phnom Penh court proceedings.

Cambodia News, Phnom Penh: Another Chinese man has been arrested and taken into custody as a suspect involved with the kidnapping and extortion attempt against the victim, Li Chen, a 34-year-old Chinese businessman, who worked at Ung-Cheng company on Diamond Island, Phnom Penh. The police said on April 20, 2020, at 2:30 am, the Chinese gang kidnapped the victim and his girlfriend. They used a gun to threaten the victims and asked for money for 200,000 yuan. The victim transferred the money to the suspects, so he and his girlfriend were released.

Some of gang of kidnappers were arrested on 10 May, and a K59 pistol was seized, following a raid by the police when Li Chen recognized one of the kidnappers and called the cops.

Law enforcement has sent a case to court for legal action and the investigation is on-going.

With this latest information, we could assume that "temporarily detained" meant the first suspects were held in custody "temporarily" while police rounded up the others.
