3 Chinese Arrested for Importing USD 900,000 Cash to Cambodia

Cambodia Breaking News (Phnom Penh): On July 09, 2019, the Cambodian customs police working in collaboration with immigration authorities, arrested 3 Chinese men for importing US$900,000 of suspicious cash to Cambodia at Phnom Penh International Aiport.

The police reported that the suspects were identified as HUANG CANMING, 27 years old, and YANG YONGWEI, 26-year-old, two Chinese nationals who arrived on flight no. LQ971 from Hong Kong, and also ZIZHENG ZHENG, 32-year-old, who came to pick up the men at the airport.

When asked by customs officials, the two men opened their suitcases to reveal wads of cash in US dollars. The total sum was US$900,000. The suspects had omitted to declare the cash on their customs form and did not inform the customs officer on arrival in Phnom Penh.

The men were unable to explain the provenance of the money to officials, so it has been confiscated by the authorities, and the three Chinese nationals have been detained for further questioning.

There have been a number of suitcases full of money seized on flights from from Hong Kong, and Cambodian customs are now on the lookout for these money mules.Three days ago, 2 Korean men were arrested at Siem Reap Airport carrying US$2.2M in undeclared money in suitcases from Hong Kong.

I have a feeling that customs might start getting a bit more pro-active about checking luggage.

There have been rumours flying around Sihanoukville for at least a couple of years now, concerning whole planeloads flying directly in from China to Sihanoukville Airport with people bringing in suitcases stuffed with $100 notes.
How surprising that nobody has ever been stopped there.
