I know this will come as a shock to most people, but James Ricketson wasn't pleased by this news:

As was pointed out on this blog several days ago, Scott Neeson flew to Perth, Australia, to meet with the Dalai Lama for a photo opportunity that will see millions more dollars flow into the coffers of the Cambodian Children's Fund.

Yes, there are some idiots like Anonymous 6.52 but I suspect that some of these are not so much Neeson supporters as men (I suspect men!) who are spoiling for a fight and it does not really matter what the fight is about. The genuine Neeson 'supporters' on the other hand, are to be distinguished by their refusal, like Neeson himself, to answer any questions, or to deal with indisputable facts. Their goal is to shoot the messenger and hope, if successful, that the message will be lost, ignored, forgotten. It has not dawned on them that even if successful there will be others in the media who will, in time, take an interest in the difference between what Neeson says about himself and what his actions reveal. This may not happen until he is in the process of publishing his book about his life and some enterprising young journalist looking for a scalp will put in the hard yards and do some fact checking. Or it may not be until the Hollywood movie is made about Neeson's life and journalists, all too often happy to tear down a tall poppy, start asking questions.

Of course, Neeson and CCF are far from being alone in having a funding model that requires the removal of children from their families. There are many NGOs is their 'child removal' business. Through their silence, through their turning of a blind eye, LICADHO and ADHOC are complicit in this removal of children. Their silence on the question of fake orphanages speaks volumes. As fort CHAB DAI, this NGO actively endorses the removal of children from their families by Christian NGOs - perhaps because CHAB DAI believes that Christians not only have a right but a duty to save the souls of young Cambodians for Jesus Christ. Regardless of these Christian's reasons for removing children (the pathway to Hell being paved with good intentions) they break Cambodian law when they trick materially impoverished parents into......

I suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

With all due respect to the Dalai Lama, I doubt he has a deep knowledge of the whole situation.

Then again, Ricketson is also suspect.

Orphanages, fake or otherwise are highly damaging to children's well being:

The World Report on Violence against Children (2006) notes that the impact of institutionalization on children is severe. It can include
“poor physical health, severe developmental delays, disability and potentially irreversible psychological damage.

Contemporary research has documented many problems in young children adopted out of institutions in Eastern Europe. Abnormalities
include a variety of serious medical problems, physical and brain growth deficiencies, cognitive problems, speech and language delays, sensory integration difficulties, social and behavioural abnormalities, including difficulties with inattention, hyperactivity, disturbances of attachment, and a syndrome that mimics autism. A rule of thumb is that for every three months that a young child resides in an institution, they lose one month of development. http://www.unicef.org/ceecis/UNICEF_A_c ... 281%29.pdf

Psychiatric Outcomes in Young Children with a History of InstitutionalizationHarv Rev Psychiatry. 2011 Jan-Feb; 19(1): 15–24.

Children raised in institutions—which is considered an extreme example of social deprivation—are one group through which we can better understand the impact of neglect on child health and development. Institutional care, while less common in the United States, remains common worldwide, with one recent report estimating that up to eight million children currently live in orphanages (2009 estimate by Save the Children UK). Despite the variability among institutions, factors that are generally common to institutional life include isolation, regimentation, an unfavorable child/caregiver ratio, lack of psychological investment by caregivers, and limited stimulation. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3445019/

Concerning children with disabilities
The goal of the Worldwide Campaign to End the Institutionalization of Children, is to challenge underlying policies that lead to abuses against children on a global scale. One of the main drivers of institutionalization – particularly in developing countries – is the use of misdirected foreign assistance funding to build new institutions or rebuild old crumbling facilities, instead of providing assistance and access to services for families who want to keep their children at home. Disability Rights International will document the role of international funders in perpetuating the segregation of children with disabilities. http://www.driadvocacy.org/learn-about- ... -children/

An old acquaintance of mine and FB friend, who turned her life around after years of abuse, was working in the kitchen for this event. The DL himself took some time out and strolled around the venue giving an audience to the staff. She said he spent about 20 minutes in the kitchen chatting the breeze. Plenty of fawning comments from her and some mystic shit, but he does sound like a proper good bloke.

Well, you can't say Scott Neeson isn't milking his encounter with the Dalai Lama for all that it's worth:

Can't blame him, I guess.

Now, now, GM, let's remember the Ferraris he gave up to come here and live on dried noodles and water.

What is it, 100K/year?

I could do that, if I cut out the expensive shit like Mekong, and eggs with pork and rice.
