Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

No one reported Dan seeking drugs in Cambodia, an unknown country to him. If one knew Dan at all, which “minburi” claims to, then “minburi” would also know an international athlete and respected school teacher wouldn’t go searching for drugs alone in the early morning.
Who would report Dan seeking drugs? Illicit drugs are easily available here as one poster already mentioned, and he could have obtained any number of substances without any ones knowledge. There seems to still be a miss conception prevalent in the "west" among certain sections of the population that those suffering from "substance abuse" are "social dregs", yet professionals including athletes also suffer from the same problem, and therefor are highly likely to go searching for a source.

Substance Abuse and Professional Sports
However, like millions of Americans, athletes grapple with drug and alcohol addictions. Rarely a day passes without news of a player entering rehab, failing a drug test, partying lavishly or overdosing on a substance.

Why athletes turn to drugs
Athletes turn to drugs for various reasons. Some do so to enhance their performance or remedy an injury. Others pick up an addiction after entering professional sports.https://www.drugrehab.com/addiction/athletes/

Drug abuse in athletes Subst Abuse Rehabil. 2014; 5: 95–105.
Drug abuse occurs in all sports and at most levels of competition. Athletic life may lead to drug abuse for a number of reasons, including for performance enhancement, to self-treat otherwise untreated mental illness, and to deal with stressors, such as pressure to perform, injuries, physical pain, and retirement from sport. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4140700/

We may never know for sure if Dan did overdose on illegal drugs.

There will be no public coroner's inquest into Dan's death in Cambodia.

I think that the results of any postmortem or autopsy done outside of Cambodia will go to the Hinkler family. If the tests show that he did have illegal drugs in his system, the family are unlikely to go public and tell the world about it.

Remember when the Canadian Dave Walker's body was found? The autopsy was done in Thailand and the report sent to his cousin who chose not to share the results publicly or with Dave's friends.

Actually, it is not possible that Daniel Hindler died of a drug overdose because none of the 119 foreigners who died in Cambodia in 2017 died of a drug overdose.

Today's Khmer Times reports that:
So Khorn Panharith, deputy director of the immigration department, said on Wednesday that 119 foreigners died in Cambodia last year, including 12 women.

“There were six causes for the total number of deaths,” he said. “About 81 died from illnesses, 11 from traffic accidents, 13 from suicide, one from murder, seven from drowning, and six unexplained deaths.”

probably counted under suicide or illness because drug overdose is self inflicted and makes you sick. its a bit like what used to happen in Thailand. tourist mugged and tey always caught a Cambodian or a Burmese or abny other nationality than a Thai to pin it on. its all about preserving the national image. We don't want anyone thinking people come to Cambodia and take drugs. Shh. no one knows
