Canadian tourist found dead in Harmony Hotel room, Phnom Penh

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Fake news in its current use is just a term used to describe a political story which is seen as damaging to an agency, entity, or person. It doesn't necessarily mean it's not true.

I saw your report online and despite my and my family’s enormous grief I feel obliged to write to you to set the record straight ....
Hi Lionel. Thanks for posting online to set the record straight.

As Jamie wrote, the administrators of this website were just reporting what was in the Khmer language media.

Actually, it was a person with the user name 'minburi', apparently a friend or acquaintance of Dan's, who gave credence to the Cambodian police claim that illegal drugs were involved. After initially signing up to this site, and writing that 'Dan was not a drug user ', minburi later posted 'after talking to people who knew of Dan well, I am not sure I got this one right. The lesson is don't buy drugs in a third world country thinking you know what you are getting. Better to stay away from drugs all together.'

Regular posters to this forum, such as me and phuketrichard, commented that Dan certainly did not have the appearance of a drug user. Another regular poster, kiwiincambodia, wrote that 'Something [was] off about this one.' Others suggested that it could have been a case of drink-spiking.

The police and press often call foreigners tourists when they have tourist visas.

Condolences.

We don't have much to go on except a "ridiculous" POLICE REPORT and even a friend of his who, clearly based on other info, now says they think it was a overdose.

Hell, we don't even have documents that suggest he had a genetic heart issue.

Having been close to Dan, I’d like to clarify that “minburi’s” allegations are untrue and simply slander to Dan’s name.

The police blamed his death on morphine overdose, yet no significant medical tests were taken. As most of us are aware, this cause is a common fallback for the Cambodian police when no foul play is detected. As mentioned, the death certificate didn’t list drugs because it could not be proven. The Canadian consulate do not have any jurisdiction to fight the local government.

No one reported Dan seeking drugs in Cambodia, an unknown country to him. If one knew Dan at all, which “minburi” claims to, then “minburi” would also know an international athlete and respected school teacher wouldn’t go searching for drugs alone in the early morning.

Having read this thread, people clearly have their own opinions about Dan..however, I’d like to think we can trust Dan’s family and REAL friends over the corrupt Cambodian police and someone who slanders his own “friends” name online.

Young men in their 20's overdose in Cambodia all the time, in "an unknown country to them." They seldom bring reporters or witnesses when they buy drugs.

Drugs aren't that hard to find in Cambodia, tuk tuk drivers approach young white skinned men an offer it to them.

You can buy morphine, and many other drugs that usually require a prescription, over the counter in a pharmacy.

Hi [email protected],

When you say you’re Daniel’s “brotha”, do you mean you an actual sibling, or do you mean a close male friend?

Hi Rhony,

When you speak of trusting Dan's family, do you mean the family collectively, or each individual member of his immediate family?
