Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. Yeah, damn those coming here to help improve impoverished communities.

social justice
noun
justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society.

Bastards! They deserve all they get - plus more.
Imagine how much could have been done to help improve communities if they had sent their $30,000+ instead of wandering around aimlessly while getting robbed.

Sent it where?

I think if people knew what happens to a lot of the money given to charity, they would give much less.

Do you think every NGO is making Cambodia is making Cambodia a better place.

There are some that are doing good. You would need to be selective where you sent it to.

All I know is that their trip and all that it cost did nothing for anyone. This was Missionary Tourism. The tour companies made money, as did the hotels and the restaurants.

You can build 8 toilets in a village for $500. That can change the lives and health of 30 families doing so. Water filtration and wells are equally needed and beneficial. (just examples) The money spent could have given a university education to the same number of high-school kids that traveled. That would have changed lives forever. You made a point to define social justice and seemed to endorse their mission as accomplished. Do you really think so?

It is likely that some of those students of their families will donate money, now that they have seen the needs.

Sometimes, bringing people to see the needs will result in more donations than just asking for donations at home.

You know this?

I didn’t endorse their mission as accomplished. I don’t know details of what they accomplished and i suspect neither do you.
I find your superior, know-it-all attitude weird. Maybe you are jumping in a tired bandwagon fuelled by legend and gossip. You seem to be of the opinion that visiting teams cannot do any good.
Whilst there are real issues with volunteerism, if done right it can deliver massive benefits - I have observed this first hand.

I don’t often agree with Explorer but this time I do.
A visit to a less developed country at an impressionable age can result in career choices relating to social justice, or advocacy a greater sympathy to philanthropy and perhaps lead to them growing up to be less entitled little gits.

Completely agree as well. Seeing the developing world at a young age is very important. You build a much greater sense of empathy which is sorely needed in this world today.

Also - I met them during their trip. They were not missionaries and I don't think they even made it to Church. They went to a Catholic School which sends out student / faculty groups to several countries on immersion / social justice themed trips (which they planned themselves). No proselytizing. They visited, learned from, and donated to multiple NGOs, used local transport, stayed in local hotels, ate at local restaurants. I think it was the definition of responsible tourism.

Unfortunate occurrence but hope they make it back before Christmas!

The group are anxious to return home in time to share Xmas festivities with their families, but the school spokesman says it's just one of those things that happens, and they bear no hard feelings toward Cambodia.

All they want for Xmas is home
Publication date 21 December 2018 | 10:16 ICT
Fourteen Canadians visiting Cambodia on a social justice trip, who found themselves stranded after their passports were stolen, will be home in time for Christmas.

“Somebody came by on a motorcycle, snatched the bag and (they were) gone,” said Bruce Campbell, General Manager for Communications & Community Relations for the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board in Ontario.

Ten Grade 11 and 12 students and four adult supervisors from St Edmund Campion Secondary School in Brampton, Ontario, were visiting the Kingdom to help construct community sanitation facilities in Sihanoukville.

Before being stranded, Fatima Gomes, aka Julio, who accompanied the students to Cambodia, documented the trip on Twitter. Gomes posted that the group had collected over 1,000lb (454kg) of school supplies for Cambodian children in rural communities.

“Yesterday we learned about the struggles of life in Cambodia. A woman working in a bakery earns $2.40 a day. Two former Khmer Rouge survivors shared their life stories,” said Gomes.

Another post showed students at a fruit and vegetable market with a caption that said: “Learning the difficulty of feeding a family on a dollar a day.”

Campbell said that the students were in “good spirits” but “anxious to return home”.

This is the second year that students from the school have visited Cambodia on a well-intentioned trip to assist the local population. Schools usually submit a proposal to a staff committee who decide on the trip based on Canadian travel advisories and its nature.

After appealing to the Canadian Embassies in Phnom Penh and Bangkok for help, the group was issued emergency exit visas and is expected to land in Mississauga, Ontario by Saturday.

“There is nothing that would deter us from returning to Cambodia in the future. The theft of personal effects could occur anywhere,” said Campbell.

Keeping all the passports with an adult is probably a good policy. If you have ten students and two adults, and everyone holds his own passport, then that's a dozen passports in a dozen places, and if one passport goes missing, if fucks everyone up because the adults aren't going to leave a kid behind in Cambodia if he loses his own passport.

Better to keep those passports in an in room safe than in a bag dangling off someone's shoulder while out sightseeing. Maybe they were staying in a shitty hostel type place with no in room safes. I don't particularly trust front desk staff at low budget Cambodian hotels to secure valuables if there is no in room safe.
