43 Cambodians Convicted of Crimes in the USA & Deported to Cambodia Arrive Today

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I don't know if anybody else noticed, but these guys are rather large compared to most Khmers.

Must be the KFC and gyms in prison.

Can't see many guys in local prisons getting that big, the menu is a tad more sparse.

That thought crossed my mind as well. I think it is because these people grew up in the U.S. and had access to healthcare as young children. I was gonna say a better diet as well. It has nothing to do w/ prisons in my opinion. I also met a woman who is in PP because of credit card fraud and another guy who is also def not here because of a violent crime. It's possible many are from violent crimes but not all.

Another pothead deported to Cambodia:
As Cambodian deportations resume, community looks for ways to cope
20 April 2018
Sothy Kum learned that he was being deported to Cambodia an hour before he boarded the bus that took him from an immigration detention center to an airport in El Paso, Texas, he said.

The 43-year-old didn’t have time to call his wife or change clothes beforehand, he added, and after more than 20 hours of travel, arrived in an unfamiliar country his family fled when he was about 2.

He was ordered for removal in 2016 and detained by ICE after serving a one-year sentence for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. He remained in ICE custody until August 2017 and was re-detained in October 2017.

“Our entire family was extremely traumatized when they knocked on our door one morning and took him away from us,” Lisa Kum, his wife, said in an email, adding that it took several months before she stopped jumping at a knock at her door.

A first glance, it seemed like an innocuous crime. Deported for a bit of weed. Pfft. That's a bit much, right?. Then I started to dig...

A round of applause please for Mr Sothy Kum! Welcome back to Cambodia to begin your life sentence. Yay!

New article saying Sothy Kum's family is moving to Cambodia to be with him. Selling drugs in the USA at age 39 when you're not a citizen isn't very smart.

I wonder what it costs to deport just one of these guys?

I suppose it saves them the $80/day minimum it costs them to imprison them, but apart form that, purely political pandering to right wing nutters.

Though I appreciate your narrow-minded obsession with money, I don't think it's a factor here. The USA deports criminals after they have served their prison sentences, not in lieu of locking them up.

It is an issue that takes my thoughts from time to time..... person from foreign country flees theirs which is maybe under war or political torment to take up a life in another to be safe from a regime that might result in their death or torture if they remained... Fair enough ! If another country opens it's doors and hearts to allow this 'refugee' into it's borders, should not then that person be so grateful for that protection that they will do no wrong ?

There was a shocking case a few years ago in Australia where 5 young men seeking asylum in Australia within the month of being granted refugee status and resettled, gang raped a teen aged girl in Sydney.

Should not then the country of their refuge say "You are no longer welcome". These people were given a gift and they shit on it.

So a Cambodian who left his country in turmoil 30 plus years ago, shits in his new country, why should he be allowed to remain I think it is fair justice to send them home, particularly when the reasons they left their country, no longer exist.

I read a while back of the 'refugees' escaping Sri Lanka, that it was stated over 60% of them went back to Sri Lanka for a holiday within 3 years of being granted refugee status in their new countries, but not a single one suffered any persecution. Just too many fakes out there.
