The Cambodian govt has consistently resisted and opposed these (Illegal?) repatriations...

If anybody has sold them down the river, it is Murika, who secretly and illegally bombed the fuck out of their country, caused the Khmer Rouge to gain in popularity, supported Pol Pot...and now that is it politically expedient, deported them, in spite of numerous protests from many Human Rights organisations and normal US citizens.

But the US wants their $500m Lon Nol-era loan back?

Sorry, but I think you're trying to deflect blame for this onto Cambodia...Cambodia did NOT make the decision to repatriate/deport them, nor did they have any part in this extermely questionable human rights controversy.

So. Did Cambodia make the decision to fight amongst themselves to the point of genocide? Or was that the evil, outside world, perpetrating communist idealson an innocent peoples?

I'm pretty sure Cambodia as a whole made a conscious decision to fight among themselves to the point of genocide, in a peaceful region not affected by outside powers, yes

I have observed a few sympathetic comments in this discussion in respect of the deportees.
Keep the facts in mind before bestowing so much compassion.

= They were NOT citizens of USA. Also, they were transferred and held in a deportation detention centre in USA after serving lengthy prison sentences before finally being kicked out of USA. The deportees were convicted on serious felony charges such as armed robbery, extortion, rape and murder. None of them were deported after minor charges. All were serious criminals.

Also, be careful when you make assumptions they were born to Cambodian parents outside of Cambodia and do not speak the language. Some of these were adults when they left Cambodia seeking a better of chosen life in USA, not necessarily as refugees, but also as immigrants through normal process (eg. marriage).

Many on this forum would be well aware of that fellow who goes by name of Bill and William with his strong southern accent, being a Laos/Cambodian who after doing 9 years prison in USA, was deported to Cambodia where he now moves about between Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, Kampot and Kep. After stealing and other crimes, he has since done more jail time in Cambodia. When free, he goes about as a confidence trickster ripping off ex-pats convinced by his B.S.. This guy would be a prime example of those recent deportees from USA. Same caliber of person.

What about Nith with his bachelors degree who just did some pot?
