Sleeping man killed by train
6 June 2017
A freight train killed a drunken man as he slept on tracks in Kampot province on Sunday night.
Police identified the victim as Sao Run, 48. He was killed instantly by the train, which was on its way from Sihanoukville to the capital.

Chhun Soeun, chief of staff at Teuk Chhou district police, said Mr Run had been out drinking with a friend and had stopped to rest on his way home when he fell asleep on the tracks.
“He drank almost every day and would often sleep on the tracks, but he knew the line was operational,” Mr Soeun said.

Same case:
The police chief said Sao Run’s wife told police that her husband would get “badly drunk” and had a habit of sleeping on the tracks after drinking.

She had rescued him from the tracks three times before and on one occasion, a passing train had clipped her husband and cut his arm, Mr. Dork said.

At a guess I'd say they are relatively flat and dry compared to the surrounding land and don't have any of the undergrowth that usually harbors phenomenal amounts of ants, other bugs, snakes etc.

One more death on the tracks, not even one week later...

Death on train track in Kampot
13 June 2017
A man was killed by a freight train in Kampot town’s Andaung commune in the early hours of Monday morning.
The train, which was carrying oil between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, ran over the man, who was known to be an alcoholic with mental health problems.

Kampot town deputy police chief Horn Sereyvuth identified the victim as Korn Savoeun, 47. He said he had become an alcoholic after separating from his wife.

“The train ran over him between 3am and 4am. He was on the tracks near to the villager’s houses. He died instantly,” he said.
“We think he was drunk and went to sleep on the tracks.”

Mr Sereyvuth said that only the extended family members of the victim came to receive his body, since he was estranged from his wife and children.
The provincial police chief donated a coffin for the man’s funeral, plus 50 kilogrammes of rice and 200,000 riel ($50), he said.

Khmer kids should be taught to look both ways before crossing the street... AND not to sleep on the train tracks.

These last two seem not to be accidents though. Very sad.

How many of the legless beggars (who most assume are victims of landmines), are actually drunks who fell asleep on the tracks?

More on the accident above. It appears that the victim was a security guard who fell unconscious on the track in a drunken stupor. Sad and stupid.

Man loses both legs in latest Phnom Penh train accident
Thu, 7 September 2017
A 33-year-old villager in Phnom Penh’s Dangkor district lost both of his legs after being struck by a train on Tuesday night, police said yesterday.
Taing Sok Heng, Proteah Lang commune deputy police chief, identified the victim as Keo Piseth.

Piseth, who is a village security guard, had been drinking in the afternoon, and began his night patrol at around 9pm, Sok Heng said.
After his patrol, he was talking to a fellow guard on a walkie-talkie when he abruptly stopped responding.
“Twenty minutes later, police received a report,” Sok Heng said, adding the victim had fallen unconscious on the tracks, and lost both of his legs when he was run over by the train.

John Guiry, chief executive officer for Royal Railways, yesterday said his company had not heard about the case yet.

He said his company has been conducting a lot of education campaigns, including sending a few staff late last week from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville, making several stops along the way, to educate people about the dangers of walking along the tracks.
The company has also been providing safety education in some schools and will soon start airing three public service announcements that it paid $30,000 for...

Man killed by train in Takeo, police say
5 March 2018
Police in Takeo province said a man was killed by a cargo train yesterday after he fell asleep on the tracks while listening to the radio and waiting for water to be pumped out of a nearby pond.

A Bati district police officer yesterday identified the victim as Meas Chea, 66, whom he said likely fell asleep on the train tracks while listening to the radio, preventing him from hearing the oncoming train.

“He was sleeping on the train tracks,” the officer said. “When we spoke to his relatives, they said that he went to pump water out of a pond to catch fish. The water in the pond was not receding quickly, so he went to sleep on the train tracks while listening to the radio.”

“According to my conclusion, he was probably asleep and could not hear the sound of the train because he was also listening to the radio,” he added. “It happened at 1am. The train was carrying goods from Preah Sihanouk province to Phnom Penh.”
