Heck, Luigi’s was full of Khmer high school kids and university types. Spoke perfect English with a proper American accent. Flipped back and forth between speaking English and Khmer amongst themselves. Food starts around $10 and goes up. Must have lots of rich mommies and daddies giving them expensive educations and pocket money.

Food is just ludicrously expensive in Cambodia for what it is. Any meat other than pork, any vegetable other than rice. Oh or that fucking pond weed they eat. War's over people, don't need to eat that any more.

It isn't the cheapest place to retire in but it does have a few good points about the place that are good enough for some peeps to handle.

I guess it all depends on not knowing what it USED to be like.....

Rent in Thailand is much cheaper on a like for like basis but the retirement visa is such a nightmare if you want to do it properly and legally that its just now worth the effort.Asia is getting more expensive and that will continue because money is pouring in from other asian countries, particularly china. Its just too difficult for this "grey" money to be invested in the west now with rules on money laundering and trade wars and corruption.
Last month my home bank refused to accept a transfer from Cambodia because Cambodia is now on a watch list next to iran, cuba and North korea!

First you got to get the o visa, criminal record check then you got make an application, open a bank account and put 800,000 baht in it then wait. Getting the o visa in the uk requires 2 day trips with overnight stop, to deliver paperwork and collect it about a week later.
In theory i can do it from here but there is a deal of confusion between pattaya immigration office, the Thai governemnt website and the Thai embassy in PP as to what paperwork you need in what order. i just gave up. Life is too short and i sure as hell am not going to fly home for 2 weeks to get the paperwork done. too bloody cold

U do NOT need have a police check to get a non o ( only if ur getting a Non O-A in ur home country)
get ur Non o for reason of being over 50 at any nearby country, valid for 90 days stay, takes overnight ( except PP where they want ya hang out of 2-3 days)
Correct need put 800,000 in the bank 2 months before ur application for 1 year extension, than it needs stay 3 months after at which time u can ONLY take out 400,000 and u need leave 400,000 in the bank.

show monthly deposits from abroad for over 65,000 baht/month

I live in a village 10 km from Sisaket, Thailand. My last home in North America was in Calgary , Canada. The website Mumbeo compares the cost of living city vs city. Sisaket is roughly 60% cheaper than Calgary. Some line items, rent and inexpensive restaurants are 80 and 90 % cheaper while cheese and imported beer and wine cost as much as %100 more in Thailand. Fortunately I can drink Hong Thong and soda. Mumbeo collects data on about 80 line items from a quart of milk to a pair of levis 501 jeans.

Ubon Ratchathani has an airport, 3 universities and an equal number of hospitals. According to Mumbeo the cost of living comparison between Ubon and P.P is Rent Prices in Phnom Penh are 126.83% higher than in Ubon Ratchathani, Restaurant Prices in Phnom Penh are 67.43% higher than in Ubon Ratchathani. Of the 80 indices only imported beer, liquor and cheese are cheaper in Cambodia.

I dare say that no only provincial Thailand cheaper than Cambodia the quality of life is better. Sisaket has a Thai Premier League football team, 2 universities and 2 hospitals. Ubon ( 60 km away ) has the department stores and airport. I can be in BKK 2 hours after leaving my house and if I have the foresight to book three weeks in advance, I can fly for $30.

The cost advantages for Cambodia would be 50c draught beers for budget drinkers and no need (yet) to provide proof of funds for over 55's.
Otherwise it seems Thailand wins hands down on costs.
