Other Asian countries are cheaper.

This. You have to project what it is going to be like down the track. Fine if you have shitloads of money but otherwise can be a tough slog and who wants that lifestyle. Not all of us have babies we can throw around to earn extra cash.

All the rest is cheaper in my experience. Prove me wrong?
Edit: just read the article again... a bottle of sparkling wine for $25?! You can have a bottle of great Prosecco for $12 in every market in Cambodia, so their figures are probably greatly (bigly) inflated.
everything else is more
i rarely pay more than $2-3 for a bottle of San Miguel light ($3.50-4 in PP) anywhere here

doesnt matter which way you look at it, Cambodia isnt as cheap as it used to be, especially on a night out now
Domestic draft in Pattaya is 50 Baht/$1.60, had a few last night, not much different to the average $1.50 in PP

The same bottle would cost you 6 EUR in Greece, maybe even less.whiteribbon wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 9:33 pm OK the only thing that's expensive is electric bills and car ownership. All the rest is cheaper in my experience. Prove me wrong?

Wine is relatively expensive in Cambodia, and so is a lot, basically anything coming from abroad (and that's a lot).
I would say there's more stuff than just cars and electricity that's more expensive in Cambodia than in the neighboring countries:
- quality health care
- quality education
- Western food
- any electronic hardware
- motorcycles
- visa / work permit / paperwork
- rents
on the other hand some stuff is pretty cheap....
- using your mobile phone
- local transport (if you want to take the risk)
- beer and spirits
- local restaurants
It depends a bit on your needs but Cambodia isn't the bargain anymore it used to be when i arrived nine years ago. Back then you could have a decent AC room in Phnom Penh for less than 10 USD a night, a Honda Dream for 1.500 USD and a nice place to stay long term for just over 150$ a month. Prices have gone up quite a bit in a few years time.

Yeah, but if you've decided to retire to Cambodia on 1250$/month, you're definitely not going to drink those, you'll be chasing the .50cemt drafts. I can't see $1200 being a very comfortable way of retiring here unless you have a very simple lifestyle. Yet another bullshit article.Jamie_Lambo wrote:Gardiguy wrote: ↑Wed Feb 06, 2019 1:47 amFor the most part, when you are comparing beer prices you would do it with domestic beer prices, not imports. Re: Cambodia is the Cheapest place to retire...
I find I spend too much because I am not being as cautious or selective with my money. Seems like every individual thing is cheaper, but then I am more of a consumer; a lot more than what I am back in the west.
Some of my western food outings for dinner for two come in as more than at 'home'.
I think I need to start worryung more about my 100r notes.

it would have been fine in SHV a couple of years ago, but that place is more expensive than PP nowBitte_Kein_Lexus wrote: ↑Wed Feb 06, 2019 12:43 pmYeah, but if you've decided to retire to Cambodia on 1250$/month, you're definitely not going to drink those, you'll be chasing the .50cemt drafts. I think Phnom Penh is amazing value at the moment if you look around. Had a nice Pizza yesterday at basaak lane for 6bucks. On the riverside you can drink a beer for 3000r and look out onto the river.
Nice Place for 250 from were I can look over to Sofitel and Ko Pich. 70 bucks for a nice gym.
I enjoy that the options and the quality of stuff is increasing. The price is not that important but still reasonable.

I like Pizza Company but have learned the hard way. Its always full and popular with the locals. How can so many of them afford to dine there? Its expensive I find for common fare.King Keil wrote: ↑Wed Feb 06, 2019 1:27 pm I think Phnom Penh is amazing value at the moment if you look around.
