Cambodia shuts down 330 print media outlets

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I think we would. Everyone needs a dog to kick or a brick wall to talk to.

Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

They are shutting down "inactive" media, so who knows ? :tumbleweed:

As for closing inactive Khmer media, it is true that there are many so-called Khmer news outlets that don't publish anything, and there have been reports that certain "journalists" from phantom newspapers earn their money through extortion for not publishing illegal activities they come across, like illegal logging, so they are no great loss.

However, it's very possible that the authorities will also use this occasion to close down local newspapers or radio stations that don't adhere to the party line, so of course there's some reason for concern, but most alternative news these days is on social media anyway.
Nearly 300 local newspapers are facing closure next year due to inactivity in publishing, an official from the Ministry of Information’s general department of information and broadcasting has said.

After a workshop titled “Peace and Security in Cambodian Media” on Friday, department general director Phos Sovann told reporters the ministry would close newspapers that never actually publish.

“We will shut down news media that never publish,” he said. “We do not want to keep them open and on our lists because it is too much.”

When asked if the newspapers were fronts for journalists to extort money from criminals by threatening publication of their activities, Mr Sovann said he could not say for sure, but noted many have been licensed for a long time and never issued a single edition.
