Cambodia to set a casino coastal region

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

From Cambodia, China can count on its loyal support on regional issues, while it also gains a strategic foothold deep in Southeast Asia. Sandwiching Sihanoukville are concessions owned by Chinese companies that give them control of well over one-third of Cambodia’s coastline.

There are currently 16 casinos operating in Sihanoukville and the national government has recently granted new gaming licenses to develop the city. At least other nine gaming venues would be opened throughout 2018, although the number could increase, as revealed by the Cambodian Ministry of Finance’s spokesperson Ros Phirun.
Only 16 my arse! There must be over 40 already! You could count 16 just running around the block near the beach road!
This is an old page and lists more than 16. Maybe the rest have no license so are illegal?

Uhhhhhhhh ...
:? Why does the government need to set a 'casino coastal region' when there already is a coastal casino region?
You could be next.

#WORLD NEWS - DECEMBER 7, 2017 / 7:20 AM / UPDATED 3 HOURS AGO

Cambodia goes all-in on China in casino port city
[.......]

MACAU TWO’
Estimates for the numbers of Chinese now resident in the city of 250,000 run from the thousands to the tens of thousands, but no figures are made public.

Across Sihanoukville, Mandarin signs are proliferating. Supermarkets packed with Chinese goods are commonplace - the only Cambodian items tend to be beer and bottled water.

Yet the current Chinese influx into Sihanoukville is nothing compared to what is forecast. Near the once tranquil Independence Beach, concrete towers have sprouted in months, promising casinos, hotels and thousands of apartments.

“This is Macau Two,” boasts Chen Hu, the 48-year-old general manager at the $200 million 38-storey Blue Bay Resort development, comparing the city to the world’s biggest gambling center.

Yes it is a sponsored article and the frightening thing is who is it sponsored by and what are they trying to achieve?

Are they really interested in developing Sihanoukville in to a wonderful high-tech 'Macau Two' or simply trying to make a quick buck, talking up prices and opportunity before collecting their money and making a quick exit?

Interestingly, there still is very little improvement in the infrastructure in Sihanoukville and the existing infrastructure can not support the existing town and casinos.

The roads in Sihanoukville are crumbling, the power cuts have returned and the rents are rising due to lack of accommodation, pushing locals and expats further and further out of town. I can't imagine there will be sufficient water for everyone in Sihanoukville during March and April 2018.

If these investors were really interested in making Sihanoukville 'Macau Two', wouldn't they also have invested in in the infrastructure in order to make sure their investment in casinos etc. pay off long-term?
