Cambodia portrayed as "hell" by international media
https://www.cambodiadaily.com/news/hun- ... ll-110006/Prime Minister HE on Wednesday lashed out at unnamed foreign journalists for overlooking Cambodia’s recent development and instead depicting the country as “hell.”
Speaking during the inauguration of a new passenger terminal at Phnom Penh International Airport, the prime minister said the way the country was portrayed in international media reports was far removed from reality.
“There are two Cambodia’s: The first one is the real Cambodia, and the second one is the Cambodia in newspapers, where a number of people defame or speak bad about Cambodia, like it’s a hell,” he said...
Has there been some particularly straight-talking articles on Cambodia in the international media recently ? Any idea what he's reacting to here ?
Surely not the stuff about FB? Though he seems to be taking that personally, and probably considers it bad for "Cambodia's" reputation ("Cambodia, c'est moi", after all).
What else has been in the international news lately that might have irritated ?
It certainly wasn't this recent travel article from NZ which could sounds more like an ad than info: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/travel/news/a ... d=11605342
blah, blah...Recovery from the tormenting years of Khmer Rouge's reign, up until a decade ago, has been slow but sure for Cambodia. Now a peaceful Buddhist nation with historical wonders and an air of grace, it is worth taking the time to marvel at Cambodia's rich and vibrant culture. Of course visitors are drawn to the wonder of sites such as Angkor Wat, but Cambodia has so much more to offer that it's almost difficult to stay focused. So read on, make your plans, and try not to fall for the charm of the country and its people...

It's a fair enough comment, the country often gets bad press. The NZ Herald does the usual bullshitting on about the Khmer Rouge. I don't understand what they are saying here either:
Are they saying that we should try not to like the place? So read on, make your plans, and try not to fall for the charm of the country and its people...

No, I think they're suggesting you'll never leave.John Bingham wrote:It's a fair enough comment, the country often gets bad press. The NZ Herald does the usual bullshitting on about the Khmer Rouge. I don't understand what they are saying here either:

Camko, and other new complexes/ shops/ cafes including the Vatanac tower. Less than 5% of the population.“There are two Cambodia’s: The first one is the real Cambodia,
Well, for anybody in need of health care that's poor... or education... or social justice.... This he guys an f'in idiot. I can't believe Bingham is defending him or the fact that Cambodia isn't a living hell for most of the poor when in need of the basics. If you need an operation, even if you own a new shop flat and are reasonably well off, what do you do? So when things are rolling along OK it's no too bad for the middle classes, but when something fucks up, or you want to give your kids a decent education, try telling me it's not a hell then.and the second one is the Cambodia in newspapers, where a number of people defame or speak bad about Cambodia, like it’s a hell,”
Many still believe that throwing a bottle at the sun will make the bastard give it up. I know it's quaint n all that, but come on.

From past form, these "announcements" are often a reaction to something that is particularly annoying him at the present moment.

Anything particular in mind ?
Just wondering what set off a speech about foreign journalists at an airport opening ceremony.
Re: Cambodia portrayed as "hell" by international media
He seems to be overacting lately. So during his speech at graduation ceremony of Norton university, he said that Thmey Thmey News is the worst news and very low class. It's believed that he made this comment about Thmey Thmey News issued article about him planning to reshuffle his cabinet.

Guess they read it on FB.Government spokesman Phay Siphan maintained that he was unaware of the details of the change-ups – which were “a secret of the prime minister” – saying he didn’t “know about this information, but after reading the news online, our officials feel shock”.

"We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
But you can never leave! "
