'No Cambodia left': how Chinese money is changing Sihanoukville

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I checked the hotels booking websites and prices are similar as before, so what prices are rising ? Maybe for long term ?

thank you to tell me.
A couple examples in Sihanoukville....

Down the end of Karaoke Street was a block of apartments rented out mostly to expats with a monthly tariff of around $150 a month. Chinese bought the building and upped the rent to over $300 a month.

One particular guesthouse I know there previously charged $18 - $22 per night per room less than a year ago. It's location makes it handy to a number of casinos. Lease of guesthouse taken over by Chinese recently. Overnight room rate now starts at $30.

The main price increase is real estate. With Chinese investors looking for land to develop casinos, the price they pay is far beyond what locals or expats would pay. There was an old guesthouse (beachfront) at SHV that was up for sale with an asking price of around half a million. Chinese investor took a look and owner sold it to them for almost 2 million.
yup, im not sure when the first time the poster came to SHV, but a lot of guesthouses are charging 50-100% more than they was a couple of years ago, SHV used to be appealing because it was great value for money, but not now, what you pay for an Fan room in SHV now you could get a nicer room with Aircon in PP

Chinese living in some of the villas and shophouses there. I believe the whole place is rented/sold to chienese now and they have plan to do uplift to the market building that has been empty for years so it would becomea mall with casino on top floor. There is plan to renovate the villas and shophouses too. Also on the empty land there they have started to build already new condos. Plan is to build 4-6 condo/hotel towers in next couple of years.

Here's Slim Dusty's song on Chinaville

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Well at least you can come on this forum and complain about the "foreigners" taking over without being called racists :stir:

(All together now!)

push, push, push your garbage
gently down the stream!
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily
life is but a dream!

(unless, of course, you're downstream that is)

just singin'

"prepare for your new leaders

From the red book of comrade Honey 69.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

It's not just Cambodia they're targeting.
