Cambodia has agreed to a deal to take asylum seekers
Source - http://mobile.news.com.au/national/camb ... 7069237022
CAMBODIA is about to sign an agreement with the Australian Government to resettle refugees that are currently being held offshore.
The Cambodia Daily is reporting that Australian Immigration Minister Scott Morrison will sign the agreement in Cambodia with that country’s Interior Minister, Sar. Kheng, this Friday.
The deal has been criticised by the U.N, human rights groups and opposition parties from both countries.
It’s not clear how many refugees Cambodia will take or where they would be resettled, although The Cambodia Daily suggested as many as 1,000 who were presently in Nauru would be taken in exchange for $40 million.
Cambodia has a poor record on handling asylum seekers. In 2009, Cambodia forcibly deported 20 Uighur asylum seekers back to China before thoroughly assessing their asylum claims.

Scott Morrison will sign a refugee resettlement deal with Cambodia
IMMIGRATION Minister Scott Morrison will sign a controversial refugee resettlement deal with Cambodia at the end of the week.
But details of the agreement won’t be made public until after it is signed off in Phnom Penh on Friday.
The Abbott government only confirmed a deal had been reached after the Cambodian government announced Mr Morrison’s impending visit.
Under the agreement, asylum seekers who arrive in Australia by boat and are found to be refugees after being processed offshore on Nauru or Manus Island in Papua New Guinea could voluntary choose to be resettled in Cambodia.
They will have freedom of movement and work rights.

What do you think Australian public opinion is, on immigration? Many Brits envy Australia's stance on immigration, although many falsely believe it's tougher than it actually is.
What do you think of the criticism in the article, that says Australia has a poor record on immigration?
Do Aussies agree with their immigration policy?
Are Aussie taxpayers concerned, that they have to pay out $40 mil?

Are you talking about legal immigration or illegal immigration?

In terms of illegal immigration, here's the general consensus. For every "free the refugees" chest-beater, there are ten Australians who support stricter laws. If the strict laws were so unpopular, they wouldn't still be in place. Keep in mind, too, that during the last election, the left-leaning party got so desperate that they put forward extremely strong stance against illegal immigration.

That makes at least 2 of us then , it might add that wonderful "European multi-culti" feeling to Cambodia

Yeah, that's why they traverse many countries on the way to Australia.taranis wrote:Surely is does not matter whether the asylum seekers end up in a camp in Australia or a camp in Cambodia? One would hope that the real asylum seeker is happy to be some where with food, water and shelter, and away from persecution.
