Yeah, managed it in India and there's fucking dogs everywhere. I did prang hard near them the first few times. I'm in no rush anyway so could always get them.

Reminder: Even without rabies, dog bites can be dangerous. This is from 2015, when a man did not have the money to pay for medical treatment following a dog bite...

Plan to cut rabies fatalities by half

- The Institut Pasteur du Cambodge and Sipar have launched a five-year action plan in collaboration with the government to reduce the death rate from rabies by 50 percent.

A statement on the plan said 800 people are affected by rabies each year and only around 40,000 people are vaccinated annually, despite an estimated 600,000 Cambodians being bitten by dogs every year.

The statement also noted the disease is 100 percent lethal if no vaccination is present, but that rabies is 100 percent preventable by vaccination, even after bite injuries.

The plan, which pulls in the health, education and agricultural ministries, calls for more education in order to increase the vaccination rate.
Two rabies vaccination centres will also be established in two provinces outside Phnom Penh, with one centre in Battambang and the other in Kampong Cham province.

“The target is to reduce rabies mortality in Cambodia by 50 percent and save 2,000 lives in five years,” the statement said.

Director of the Institut Pasteur in Cambodia Didier Fontenille said that rabies in Cambodia is mainly transmitted by dogs, the majority of which are not vaccinated.
“The majority of these dogs have owners, with very few being strays,” he said.

Health Ministry spokesman Ly Sovann said rabies can spread easily to humans if a person is bitten or scratched by infected dogs or bats.

According to studies carried out by the Epidemiology and Public Health Unit at the Institut Pasteur in Cambodia, rural communities have on average one dog for every three people – the highest reported figure in the world.

With about 80 percent of Cambodia’s population living in the countryside, rural areas are home to more than four million dogs.

- In order to spread awareness and limit the damage caused by rabies, animal rescue groups across Phnom Penh are vaccinating animals against the deadly virus for World Rabies Day.

Cambodia has one of the highest death rates caused by rabies in the world, with around 800 people reported to have died from it this year, more people than malaria and dengue combined.

The major cause of the virus spreading is dog bites, with the Cambodian definition, chkae chkuot or “mad dog” reflecting this.

It was the core reason behind the vaccination efforts of Animal Mama Veterinary Hospital and Pet Wellness Center, according to founder Yulia Khouri.

“Cambodia is number one now leading in human death from rabies which is completely needless. It’s 100% preventable but is 99.9% deadly if it’s not treated,” she said at the centre yesterday.

Until tomorrow, Animal Mama will be administering free rabies vaccinations to pets, both dogs and cats, which can also carry the virus, in order to stop the virus from spreading. The centre is also raising awareness about how people can guard themselves and their pets from the disease...

I quite agree with this quote from the link provided, "Khouri said even with the combined efforts of rescue centres in the city, the overwhelming number of stray animals in the capital, let alone the provinces, meant there needed to be more government action.
“I think there’s a place for everyone here. Not one agency can [do this alone] with the limited budgets and all the animals across Cambodia. It’s impossible,” she said."

In short until veterinary services are available in villages rabies will continue to be a threat.

Japanese vet to help Cambodia prevent rabies

A Japanese veterinarian will open a clinic in Cambodia in February to support the country's anti-rabies measures.

46-year-old Haruo Kikuta from Gunma Prefecture will open the clinic in Phnom Penh after obtaining permission from the Cambodian government. He will be the first foreign veterinarian to do so.

Kikuta says an increasing number of Cambodian people are keeping pets as the country's economy develops. But, he says, Cambodia is short of vets and lags behind in anti-rabies measures.

He says he will work to prevent rabies and carry out a campaign to raise awareness of the disease while treating the animals he sees.

Kikuta is calling for cooperation from other veterinarians in Japan. He says he hopes Japanese techniques will help eradicate rabies in Cambodia.
