Cambodia child labour laws flouted

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Cambodia child labour laws flouted

Post by Anchor Moy »

Some factories try to hide underage workers when visitors come, according to a Human Rights Watch report into the Cambodian garment industry published this month.

One 15-year-old, who started work in a clothes factory aged 14, told HRW researchers: “They told me to hide under the table and put a pile of clothes on us. We tried to keep very quiet when the visitors were there.”

A 17-year-old at a different factory told HRW that early last year, a day before visitors were due, management called a meeting of all young workers and told them to stay at home the next day.

One of the main problems is the ease with which workers can get fake IDs. “My daughter was too young to work, so we borrowed a family book and birth certificate from another family,” says Tha, the father of a 17-year-old New Star worker. “Families help one another.” As there are no photos on Cambodian IDs, his daughter simply memorised the new details. Tha used the same procedure for his niece, who was 16 when she started work at the factory.

I lied about my age to get my first job as a teen a few times....15 working on building sites and at 16 working behind the bar...

Edit : and I lied about my age when I went to Spain on a Club 18-30 holiday at 15...happy days
I was born with nothing , and I still have most of it left.

It's not that long time ago that kids were expected to work in Europe. Yes, most studied at the same time but not all. I started to work in our family business when I was around 12 years old, and my mom and dad started even younger.

I found it hypocritical when first world countries condemn things they did as developing nations and expect developing countries to comply with first world standards even they might not be helpful. Which one is better, to work at age of 14 or starve? Abusing the cheap labor is another story.
