Brittney & Michelle to the Rescue

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

and what are the 300 shiny lady bars on riverside for? prayer meetings. Expats are the worst hypocrites in the world when it comes to the sex trade. Full of wonderful excuses. There are "lady-bars" on Riverside? I never noticed any, where are they? The riverside is pretty sleazy, loads of beggars on the sidewalks and then a very sketchy scene across by the river itself. Glue-sniffers, homeless people with serious mental problems etc, but as far as I could ever work out it seems to be dominated by restaurants rather than bars. And I don't see where your moral indignation is coming from, or why you are assuming that someone who comments on local mores must be a total sleaze themselves. Are you projecting? 8-)
Not really john. I was referring to riverside the area. As far as I know the road you are referring to is called Sisowath Quay. I was responding to a post which was in an expat forum where many expats extol the virtues of the sex trade pointing a finger at khmers karaoke. Just seems a bit pot calling kettle black, or maybe using the locals behavior as an excuse for their own. By all means declare the virtues of hookers if you want, eve declare why your think its a good thing. but don't just say "well I can do it because the locals can"
i think you missed the initial point,
they were blaming the civilized west for cambodians sex slavery,
when most of the girls being sex trafficked into the sex trade here are aimed at Asian clientele, whether it be KTV's, "Massage Joints", Brothels,
Places most westerners, espesh the ones that frequent the riverside area, dont go or even know about,
the girls that work in the bars around riverside are usually there through choice and not obliged to go sleep with customers

take your point, but I think many of the girls are still forced into the game by Greedy mums, poverty, sick relatives, running away from the village motivate a lot. The mother in law threatened to sell her youngest to a KTV if we didnt give her money, and we called the child protection unit to have a word with her about jailtime! She had already sold her eldest as a housemaid at the ripe age of 6. When I was a younger and naughtier boy I got quite friendly with a mama san in pattaya and she had scouts out in the villages looking for families in debt. She would then go and buy the prettiest daughter by paying off the debts, The girl then had to work off the debt and the interest for the family before she would be allowed to go home. Not sure if the practice continues today, but anyone wanting to marry the girls had to pay off the mamasan's debt. Remember a big argument one night when the barang came in with his mates and had it out with mamas an. Westerners might not be the cause, but they add to the demand.

exactly, but how is the west to blame?
sure some girls are able to go work in hostess bars instead of being sold into brothels,
and those hostess bars in thailand and cambodia are usualy aimed at foreign customers,
but you dont get hostess bars in the west, they are an Asian invention originally aimed at Asian Clientele

so im still trying to see how the west is getting the blame for Cambodias Sex/Human Trafficking crisis as reported in the article

the sex industry in Cambodia is aimed at Asian clientele
if you think the 110 hostess bars in phnom penh and the 20-30 in sihanoukville out number the amount of KTVs, "Massage" joints and full on brothels aimed at Khmer customers, you might need to re-think the situation

UK threatens to cut off aid cash to charities after Oxfam sex report
By William James
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain will cut off aid funding from any organisation that does not comply with a new review into charities work overseas, aid minister Penny Mordaunt said on Sunday, describing reports of sexual exploitation in the sector as "utterly despicable".
Oxfam, one of Britain's biggest charities, on Friday condemned the behaviour of some former staff in Haiti after a newspaper report said aid workers had paid for sex while on a mission to help those affected by a 2010 earthquake.

Oxfam faces more sex abuse and prostitution claims from Chad after Haiti

LONDON, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Oxfam, an international anti-poverty charity, which has been hit by a sex abuse scandal in Haiti, now is facing more sex allegations from Chad.

The charity, one of the biggest and best known in Britain, was plunged into crisis after it was revealed that its staff, including its local director, paid for sex in Haiti where they were based in 2011 after a devastating earthquake.

The Sunday Times reported in London that more than 120 aid workers with leading charities in Britain have been accused of sexual abuse in the past year.

One thing I will say in defence of the girly bars by comparison with the KTVs etc ( lets not forget that the vast majority of all these places are owned by Khmer and other Asians) is that they don't employ children to perform sex with adults as the KTVs etc often do.

Also, I don't know if this is true or not, but someone in Vietnam told me a lot of the girls have been put on the game by their parents etc by the age of 12 or 13 to service the village community. When they get to the age of 18 they can go and earn more money legally in the bars of HCM.

So you know me pczz? You know that I go to ladybars every night, take drugs, and pay for hookers?

Not only do you NOT know me, you also completely missed the point I was trying to make. Maybe actually read the original article before generalizing across the board? (I take it you are Khmer as you are obviously not an expat?).

You're just repeating yourself. Nobody is declaring the virtues of anything. You're obviously feeling a deep sense guilt about all the hookers you've been with and are projecting it onto others.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
