The diluted spirits thing is probably going on. A few years ago, a news company in Boston tested around 30 of the most popular bars in the area and almost all of them diluted their name brand spirits with their well spirits. If this stuff is happening in a developed country with some sort of quality control, what are the odds it is happening in a country with no quality control? Still, drinking cheap whiskey instead of expensive whiskey won't kill you, maybe it'll give you a shitty hangover though.

Yes, noticed that one night out drinking gin cocktails in S'ville and didn't pay attention to the brand. That cheap Harpoon gin gives a hell of a hangover - I wouldn't knowingly touch the stuff with a barge-pole now. Didn't kill me though. Just made me very sorry, sorry, sorry - and a bit more careful.MekongMouse wrote:The diluted spirits thing is probably going on. By the way, if cocktails are really cheap, there's a good chance that they're made with cheap booze . (I know, rocket science.)Harpoon gin is about $5 a bottle so you can imagine.

There needs to be more information for these unsupecting tourists who go to phnom phen and ends up been sold HEROIN in place of a relatively harmless party drug COCAINE. So many tourists have died of this now with still no information been put in front of them. Marc had died just 27 years old and left a loving family and friends behind, he wouldent of dreamed about touching anything if he new what was been given.
This needs to stop now, there needs to be information at the boarders, airports and hotels to stop more mother having to burry there own sons!!!

This (information to drug tourists) has happened elsewhere - I'm thinking of the Netherlands where they did actually put signs up warning people about heroin sold as coke.

But in Cambodia you have to look after yourself and your mates, because no one will do it for you. You can't really expect the police to control the quality of street drugs after all.
Sorry if he was a friend of yours, but that's how it is.

I agree. The Netherlands has the resources to effectively police that. It can't really happen here. Heroin very obviously not cocaine too, so I'm assuming all these ODs are from people who have never used either drug before and thus do not recognize it when they see it. If you're going to do drugs, you should be smart about it and study up before railing some random powder some dude you've never met in a country you've spent all of a week in, gives you. Just common sense.Anchor Moy wrote:Was it an OD then?Leeds wrote:There needs to be more information for these unsupecting tourists who go to phnom phen and ends up been sold HEROIN in place of a relatively harmless party drug COCAINE. I feel bad when parents lose their children to stupid mistakes, but I hate when they then blast everyone but the child, who is ultimately the one to blame.
Re: British Tourist Marc Davey Dies in WalkAbout, Phnom Penh
Yes it's easy to say common sense, and there stupid but does that mean more people have to die. The heroin that is sold is exactly the same look as cocaine. Obviously you shouldn't buy it in the first place but people still do, that doesn't mean the problem should be forgot because it's there mistake. It's not hard to have a leaflet given when you enter the country warning about different scams. Why should more people die when it can be prevented with giving information.

I'm sorry, but you're wrong about them looking the same. I've been offered heroin instead of cocaine and it is always instantly recognizable. As for information, a quick Google search will reveal an abundance of information. Cambodia is not a developed country. They don't have the resources to start a mass education campaign, but if you do your research, there is information out there. People who travel to undeveloped countries need to be willing to do their own research. Handing everyone leaflets as they enter the country because some people aren't responsible travelers seems like an overreaction and reinforces the idea that people aren't responsible for their own actions.
Re: British Tourist Marc Davey Dies in WalkAbout, Phnom Penh
Well I will be writing to my embassy and pushing other places for something to be done as I personally do think information will help and it won't cost much to hand out a leaflet. Mass campaign is not what I said. Also I saw this heroin and I've seen cocaine 100s of times so let me tell you it does look exactly the same.
