How did you get here in the first place? Why not down a bunch of Prozac on your way to the airport and supplement during the layover?Ronny wrote:General, while we're on the subject, what do I need to do to get Travel Insurance from here in Thailand? Here's my situation: For the past few years. I have been suffering from really bad panic attacks (God only knows why) and as of now, getting on a plane to fly 27 hours back home is out of the question. So what I did is contact an agent from a freighter company so that, if need be, I can travel back to the US by boat (freighter). Of course this isn't something that is generally done but if I go back to the US, I feel it's my only option. There is a freighter that leaves from a port in Malaysia and then goes over the Atlantic to New York. It's on the expensive side (about $5,000) and takes about 2 1/2 weeks and the agent only told me I will NEED Travel Insurance. Are there any cheap 1-way package deals? Do you know anything about this? Your advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Anyways, nice to hear this can still be done. Used to be how people travelled up to the 70s, especially if they wanted to save money or were bringing a lot of stuff such as a motorcycle.

I have spent some time on Koh Samui---my 'gf' lives there---I grew up on dirt bikes starting with my Honda trail 70 when I was 12--moved up to a Honda 500-4 in my early 20s---That said---I rented a Honda PCX150 for 3 weeks and NEVER drove it---My "gf" has lived on Samui for over 8 years and knows it like the back of her hand---I let her drive---I road 'bitch' and did not give a flying fuck at the funny looks I got---
Riding with her through busy streets--back alleys--back roads--up mountains to Wats--shortcuts--you name it was quite an experience--
I lived in Jamaica in the 80s--and was familiar with people driving on the LEFT----yikes--always too stoned to even dream of driving anything-
In Koh Samui I saw danger ing every inch(2.54cm) of the way---BUT, had to laugh at myself as I watched kids--old ladies-entire families crammed on a scooter-and girls from all over the world pilot their scooters about---AND 'macho' fellas of every ethnicity drive too fast---too stupid and too cocky---
Toss in the garbage trucks---cars---SUVs----bicycles--pedestrians and all I saw was a sure buzz kill---and danger
A German man was killed a few days ago on a curve I remember well----hit some slippery garbage in the road---no helmet---
A Russian going too fast slammed into 3 Thais on a scooter and killed several---a few weeks ago---
Nothing new---
Too much traffic---too narrow of roads---too many people on Yaba and Yaba ICE--and drunk---and toss in driving on the left---
My 'gf' never wears a helmet and told me I quote---YOU DON'T NEED ONE AT NIGHT -THE POLICE DON'T CARE AT NIGHT-------
What a mindset!
She has Buddha to protect her and helmets are only to avoid the police pulling you over---
as far as insurance goes-----the fine print is always the most important part of the contract---
Take for example the thousands and thousands of people in Louisiana, USA who had Hurricane insurance during the KATRINA disaster---
The insurance companies denied claim after claim because the disaster was caused by a FLOOD--NOT THE HURRICANE itself---
I feel for the girl who was injured---BUT---seeing that her and her beau were doing the BAREFOOT trek across SEA---I am not surprised she has been involved in an accident---
What kind of drugs do I need to take to wrap my brain around a guy who does not want to fly 27 hours BUT will pay 5 times more to take a freighter for several weeks????????????

Let's put it this way: I wouldn't wish Panic Disorder on my worst enemy. I came here to Thailand 10+ years ago and my panic Disorder didn't start until 4+ years ago. Yes, you can still travel by freight but now it's quite expensive.

Curious - why wouldn't you just travel by land to the nearest seaport that takes cruise ships, and join a cruise home? Surely it would be cheaper, and you'd have a lot more fun...

Not to exacerbate your panic, but 2.5 weeks stuck on a boat in the pacific sounds like the worst kind of hell compared to just 26 hours of properly medicated sleep. Can't be too hard to find some seroquel and wake up at home.Ronny wrote:Let's put it this way: I wouldn't wish Panic Disorder on my worst enemy. Cabin fever, giant rolling waves, strange seafolk, no escape. Good luck.
Not sure if world nomads covers freighters, but they will do short coverage. Go take a look at their fine print.

Jeff, you don't need to take ANY drugs. But what you need is to have a panic attack yourself and if you did I know without a doubt you'd get that chip off your shoulder.

Jesus heff59, what is it with all the --- ? I tried to read your post but couldn't.
To all the people suggesting drugs to Ronny: if you are really scared of traveling 30,000 feet in a metal tube, they probably won't help. I am scared of flying, though not as badly as Ronny, and tried drugs and that made things only worse. Still scared, wide awake, and feeling crap.

Stroppy, the nearest port for cruise ships is Hong Kong, I believe, but I think your idea is a good one. I didn't know cruise ships were cheaper than freighters but if they are, I'll definitely look into it.

I'm pretty sure that those cruise ships I've seen in Sihanoukville are in Sihanoukville.....
