British man WILLIAM JULIAN MAGEE Found Dead in Phnom Penh Room

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Condolences to the family. It is hard on them when someone dies far away. However, I can't believe the prices quoted here. That's insanely expensive IMO.
we will need to raise approximately £6700 just to get William back to the UK, we then need to raise a further £6000 to cover the funeral expenses.
I agree with those who suggest that cremation is a better alternative to shipping bodies, and it's not just about the money.

It's not just because I'm not religious, I just think it's a waste of resources, especially if you can't actually afford it and have to crowdfund it. Cremated remains can be sent through the post, while actual cadavers are bio hazardous and cost a whole lot to freight. Maybe I'm just a bit too pragmatic but to me a person is a very different thing than just the body they may have recently departed from. It must be very sad for his relations but a cremation is the usual way to go here.
There are many people who feel the need to see the body in order to obtain closure, and for them cremated remains will not be enough. Condolences to the family

Too many young foreigners traveling in Cambodia die here - no autopsy is ever performed, hence 'heart attack'. Sad all this. Gofundme for funeral costs? Bizarre.

If they get the body home maybe they can get another one done?

Toxicology examinations need to be preformed within a short period of death AFAIK.

I am surprised that strangers are willing to help with this. Its like when someone's house burns and they didn't have insurance. All the responsible people that do, have to still reach in and help.

RIP to William, 30 is crazy young to die.
The people that we expected to contribute to the GoFundMePage was just family and Friends. My mother was going to get william cremated before a lot of people asked to bring him home and that they would all help pay the cost. You said ‘surprised that strangers are willing to help with this’ They’ve obviously got big hearts and some of them have messaged me because they’ve been through this themselves. Even I don’t go on holiday with insurance and I will now learn from this and I hope more people do

Thanks for sharing that.
I've posted this before, but if you are a tourist - as opposed to a longterm expat - your bankcard may include death or injury insurance. Depends on the cards. In my case, I automatically have 90 days death or accident insurance cover for a trip if I pay for the plane ticket with my bankcard. I'm aware that not all bankcards offer this, but sometimes people just don't realise that they can claim through Visa or Mastercard, so check your bankcard conditions.
