British tourist CARL KENDALL commits suicide on Koh Rong Island, Cambodia

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Why would this guy kill himself? He looks like a stud and probably exercises everyday.
He looks well fed, strong and he's only 39.

I'd be suspicious of this being called suicide.
Here we go. "IT WAS MURDER! THEY WANTED HIS MONEY!"

I can guarantee that if that was the nail, it wasn't the overriding cause.

RIP to a troubled soul.

In most other countries, I'd agree with you.

Parts of SE Asia do weird shit to people, or at least create potential for it to happen.

Seen people who survived many other countries go off the rails here and do stuff that they would never dream of back home.

RIP and condolences to family and friends.

Which can be viewed as a negative, and people often talk about people not being able to survive the harshness or whatever of Cambodia. Another perspective is that Cambodia provides an environment that makes it easier to achieve what they have wanted to do for many years, and to do it in a style that doesn't involve leaping in front of trains or what have you.

What the fuck? A guy you know nothing about commits suicide and your first response is to just blame women?

Yes, it would appear Richard has had a bad run-in with a woman.....

And there's a GoFundMe (technically a "Just Giving") page set up for Carl Kendall's children. Very sad.

"Weʼre raising £500 to support Amy-Leigh and Mylo, the daughter and grandson of our good friend Carl, who sadly has died."

Image

I personally feel a goal of a mere £500 to give to two children split between them is aiming way too low.

I am one of Carls friend's - the money that is being raised will now be to bring his body home, we believe his insurance has expired although we are awaiting his Father to update us. Carl was a brilliant lad who would do anything for anyone, give them his last penny or protect them at his own risk.

If anyone hears anything about what has happened please can you let me know, long shot granted but still. It still has not sunk in yet and i keep expecting hm to message saying 'soppy b*llocks, got you didn't i' - but i know this isn't going to happen.
If anyone here saw Carl in the last few days again please let me know, we want to try and understand what could have happened prior to him taking his life.

Thanks

Condolences man.

I wish it were untrue, but it's unfortunate that he's gone.

By looking at his Facebook and comments from his friends, I think he seemed very depressed, and I'm guessing that wouldn't be a surprise to anyone close to him.

And I have no issue with GoFundMe. My only point was that you should be asking for something like £5,000 instead, which I'd bet you'd get. CEO has seen more death related GoFundMe campaigns over the years than we can probably count, and I've never seen one so low. Heck, you've already surpassed your goal, which is what I was saying, and I still think it's too low. He left kids behind, so I think it's going to a valid cause, and I'd like to see it raise more funds for the people he left behind from kind hearted doners willing to help out his family, so no shame in raising it to £5,000 or more. The current £1,000 goal will BARELY be enough to fly just one friend or family member back here to help with the process.

Personally, I'd pass on bringing his corpse back and just give the money to his kids. Why spend on the dead with no needs what you can spend on the living with needs?

Here are some prices from about 6 months ago from a Cambodian company mentioned elsewhere:

Hi Carl's friend,
I see that Carl was staying at Monkey Island bungalows on Koh Rong. They would be the best people to get in touch with for information about your friend before he died. They might have other contacts that you could try.

They are affiliated with Monkey Republic backpackers place in Sihanoukville.

I'm not sure you will get some answers but it's worth a try. If you call, ask to speak to the boss.
Sorry for your loss, and condolences to Carl's family and friends.
