British & Canadian Tourists NATALIE JADE SEYMOUR & ABBEY GAIL AMISOLA Die From Drug Overdose in Kampot, Cambodia

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Never mind the head-shaking and the tut-tutting.Two people dying at the same time points to death by drug overdose, there's no getting around that. What did they take before they died ? There are all these pills scattered on the floor by the bodies and no one has identified them. This is being treated like a state secret. No wonder people are speculating.
Of course,I'm so sorry for the families, but I think that people have a right to know, that it is in the public interest to know what killed two young healthy women in a matter of hours.

Exactly, its impossible to OD on Imodium, unless you are deliberately miss using and taking 150 tablets a day of course in an attempt to get high. People only do this when opiates are not readily available. In these circumstances people also use Imodium is a self detox program. "Extreme Dangers of Using High-Dose Imodium for Opiate Withdrawal" https://americanaddictioncenters.org/pr ... r-opiates/

"James Galligan, Ph.D., a professor of pharmacology and toxicology, and director of the neuroscience program at Michigan State University, says no." “It’s impossible to accidentally overdose on loperamide,”

However this is not the case with Codeine which is an opiate used for pain management and also can be used for the control of diarrhoea, "codeine works by acting on opioid receptors that are found in the muscles lining the walls of the intestines." Codeine is or was readily available over the counter.
Note:
Codeine can slow or stop your breathing, and may be habit-forming. MISUSE OF THIS MEDICINE CAN CAUSE ADDICTION, OVERDOSE, OR DEATH, Fatal side effects can occur if you use codeine with alcohol, or with other drugs that cause drowsiness or slow your breathing.

If I would be looking for an accidental cause of death in this case, commensurate with the theory of pharmacy medication causing death, then this would be my bet.

A codeine-paracetamol together with a beer (or two) will not kill you. Of course it's possible one's extra sensitive for the combination, and he or she is the one in thousand drawing the bad number a have a severe reaction, and maybe dies, but two at the same time? It's the fact two young healthy women dying within hours that makes a lot of causes discussed here highly unlikely, especially since they were not (twin) sisters, so the chance of those two unlucky girls (over)reacting exactly the same to some medicine is highly unlikely.

Besides, these girls most probably had smartphones, and after buying some medicine that would be restricted back home you would expect them to check the internet for the dose needed and the dose to avoid before using it. I mean, they were quite educated girls, weren't they.

Why?
seldom on here do we ever find out what REALLY happened or what (or who) killed someone.

lets all head out and look for Mira Now :beer3:

No one said it could! We are talking Codeine here, as in Codeine Sulphate/Phosphate/Hydrochloride, not medications such as Panadene Forte, which contains paracetamol and small amounts of Codeine. Eg 500 mg + Paracetamol 15 mg, ie not substantial amounts of Codeine. Granted panadene Forte with a few beers are not likely to cause ill effects, but it is possible dependent on the amount consumed. However Codeine unadulterated and taken with alcohol can be quite dangerous as I previously mentioned.

Eg Patients with chronic pain who use opioid analgesics along with BZDs and/or alcohol are at higher risk for fatal/nonfatal overdose and have more aberrant behaviors. Few practice guidelines for BZD treatment are readily available, especially when they are combined clinically with opioid analgesics and other central nervous system–depressant agents. However, coadministration of these agents produces a defined increase in rates of adverse events, overdose, and death, warranting close monitoring and consideration when treating patients with pain.
