BIGGEST NIGERIAN BUST YET! Police Arrest 45 Nigerians Who Will Be Deported for Living in Cambodia Illegally!

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

In retrospect, perhaps you should have.
Probably. However I had one passport stolen in 2007, and if it happens more than twice in a decade it's at my country's MOFA discretion as to whether they will issue another.

Plus it was likely I'd find it at any time. Turned out it was inside a picture frame. Great drunk security precautions

And yes, I believe it's written somewhere that tourists in Cambodia should carry passports at all time.

I certainly never have, and never will.

^^ With any luck LTO or John Bingham may be along soon and give their version of the official line.

My understanding has always been that you do NOT need to carry your passport with you at all times.
That said, it has always been advisable to carry a photocopy of your passport just in case.
- You are involved in an accident, you can be quickly ID'd.
- Police, of any kind, want to see your docs for whatever reason.
- Passport is stolen, you still have a copy.
. . . etc.

When I visit the beach and check-in to a hotel, I give my phone number as my ID. Never been a problem. However, I am travelling with KH wife and kids, so your mileage may invariably vary.

We carry a reduced and laminated photocopy of our passport face page/current visa with us. Saves any hassle. Same risk as the copies of our drivers licenses, some truly determined cop might insist a copy is not good enough, but so far so good.

I don't know if it is the law to carry your passport all the time. In Thailand it is. Here, not sure. I never carry my passport here, even when I'm traveling around the provinces, though i keep a photocopy in my wallet. I have a few Cambodian IDs which seem to work well enough in the few situations I need an ID here.

I know the word is out in the Vietnamese community here that if you have proper ID (e.g. Vietnamese passport, KH family book, work permit, work ID, etc) it is advisable to carry it or a copy, especially after the raids on Vietnamese areas much like the one on these Nigerians, where thet scoop up everybody without ID.

Interesting thought. I has been suggested that now that the police have consolidated certain markets for themselves, they are just eliminating the the competition.
