Pic from about 7.30am this morning, everything on the roof level was destroyed.

The Cambodian Red Cross had arrived and set up chairs. Hopefully they were arranging some emergency accommodation or other help for the people who had lived up there.

A neighbour indicated to me that everyone got out alive, I hope that's true.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia News: A report today says the fire was started by faulty electric wiring, and a total of eleven wooden shacks burnt down in the fire. They also say that the firefighters had a problem to control the outbreak because the water hoses don't reach as far as the fourth floor. (This information might be worth noting for expats living in an apartment block on the fourth floor or higher. )

Fortunately, no one died, but some very poor families lost all their possessions in the blaze.

GT: On Sunday morning, December 16, 2018, the sub-working group of CRC Sub Branch Office, Khan Daun Penh, led by Sok Penh Vuth, Honor sub-branch visited and brought humanitarian aid from the Cambodian Red Cross with the presence of Samdech Kittipritbad Bun Rany HE, Distributed to 6 families affected by fire at 6 pm on December 15, 2018, caused by electric current in 6 Village, Sangkat Phsar Chas.

In the meantime, the subordinate honors of the sub-branch brought with them the sad participation of Samdech Kittipritbad Bun Rany HE, President of the Cambodian Red Cross with the families of victims, and please feel free to hope for life, you can practice To find a way to restore a family's life. At the same time, he also called on all citizens to be very careful in preventing the fires.

The humanitarian gift offered in one family is: 30 kg rice, 1 cups, 2 saunas, 2 roses, 1 jacket, 1 fish sauce, 1 serving of lime juice, 1 pound of sugar, 3 kg of sugar, 6 sets of kitchenware, 9 faces. And 63 million Riels.

(note: I don't think they got two saunas. Rice cookers perhaps? And roses? Maybe someone can clarify the below...)

Yes I thought that was particularly generous. I thought it could possibly be for all the affected families combined, but as UT clarifies, you just can't trust GT.

Do they even have land titles for those huts? It looks like the Vietnamese market community I had above an old apartment. They built illegally without sangkat permission in the night and stole electricity. That's why they were living in huts like that on the roof, they were generally shitty people squatting there only to be close to the nearby market.
