Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

There was a big fire behind Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) along the train tracks which injured several people and destroyed houses. No deaths reported.

Authorities believe the fire was caused by some small gas cans that exploded.

They are building tall buildings in PP and have no ladder trucks, much less a decent fire department. Here in Sihanouville I've heard they want cash money before squirting any water on a fire. They have little or no turnout-fire protection gear, no Self-contained-breathing-apparatus, and the fire nozzles are all wrong as they can't put down a curtain of fog or half-fog. The Australian NGO that supposedly trains Cambo firemen is useless and like most NGOs here just interested in supporting themselves. We are lucky most everything here is concrete.

I watched the fire at the Monkey Republic a year or so ago and with one decent firetruck, three inch and a half hose lays, adjustable fire nozzles, air-packs (for breathing), turn-out gear and an attack fire plan/proper training, three or four of us fireman trained in the US could have put the fire out in about fifteen minutes. We call what the Cambo firemen did a "Weeny Roast" as for all the good they did they just might as well have gotten out the hotdogs and sticks and put the fire to good use.

I've heard that the port here in Snooky has a well equipped fire brigade, but they won't even talk to the city fire department. We call cooperation between fire departments when in need "Mutual Response." None here, but what can one expect when you also have a police department that is worse than useless. As in Thailand years ago, the government services have a lot of growing up to do in the future and stop all the money for services being stuffed in peoples pockets.
