Belgian Fugitive & Expat TANGUY TALLER Arrested for Cocaine Trafficking in Cambodia

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

What does David Catry's death mean for Tanguy Taller ? Taller's familyn and defenders claim that Catry named him as a co-drug trafficker under duress, and that Catry later withdrew his accusation against Taller.
However, Taller's appeal hearing was rejected by the Phnom Penh Appeal Court last month, in April 2022. post541011.html#p541011

Death of David (39) in Cambodian cell may have serious consequences for Bruggeling Tanguy (41): “Our son is innocent in the cell. Only David could exonerate him.”

Brugge: “Will our son ever be released now that his key witness is dead? No one can say it.” The death of David Catry (39) may have far-reaching consequences for Tanguy Taller (41), another Bruggeling who is in the same Cambodian prison. According to his parents, Tanguy was wrongly designated as the client for the smuggling by David. The latter also admitted that and withdrew his statement. Only: he can no longer testify in court. "What now? That question has been occupying our minds for several days.”

This might finally get the Belgian authorities to get off their asses and try to get Taller back to Belgium.

Canty, 40, died of a well known pre-existing condition (previously hospitalised) and it was almost certainly preventable given proper medication and prompt medical attention. The prisons authorities here not only don't give a shit if you die in their custody, they actively endanger people by making access to proper medications and healthcare impossible.

Prey Sar ought to be a national disgrace, slightly ahead of the Judicial system that fills it up. No western government should let their citizens languish in these places serving ridiculously long sentences in conditions that will either kill you or severely damage your health in a few short years.

Belgian authorities either do give a shit about more or less, there is no embassy, the one in Bangkok covers KOW, and in case of problems, the french embassy in PP should act, and they dont give even less about it. And as this 2 guys are flemish, the french embassy even cares less, i had already issues with french embassy in PP about a Visa-problem (i am flemish also, but i speak perfect french). I am sure, even if he would ever come to Belgium, he will write and read perfect Khmer !!

This might be the idea, do they really want to look after someone for 30-40 years till they die of old age when the prisons are already full

These western governments don't decide what happens in a foreign jurisdiction.

UPDATE: Supreme Court Appeal Denied

December 29, 2022
Supreme Court upholds life sentence of Belgium drug smuggler
Buth Reaksmey Kongkea / Khmer Times
The Supreme Court yesterday upheld the conviction of a Belgium man, sentenced by the lower court to life in connection with transporting more than one kilogram of cocaine from Brazil to Cambodia’s Phnom Penh International Airport, in 2018.

Presiding Juge Nil Nonn named the convict as Tanguy Eddie J. Taller, 37, a Belgium freelance designer.

“The convict was sentenced on December 18, 2018, by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to a life sentence in prison and a fine of $20,000 for drug trafficking under Article 40 of Cambodia’s Law on Drugs Control.

“Tanguy appealed to the Phnom Penh Appeal Court, who upheld his conviction on April 6, 2020. He then appealed to the Supreme Court”.

“Tanguy was arrested on October 4, 2019, at the Cambodian-Vietnamese-Border, in Svay Rieng Province’s Bavet City, after he had crossed the border from Vietnam and checked in with the Cambodian Immigration Police office”.
