Belgian Murder Suspect (Olly) Flees Cambodia on Bail

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I actually don't think that was the case in this situation, or at least not the main issue.
Happy to defer to more experienced heads!
Sorry, I didn't mean for that to sound snotty, I just didn't have TIME to respond at length. This case was a big deal and there was a lot of external pressure (France, whoever cares about tourism in the Cambo gov) to get this solved as quickly as possible. Lots of reasons to pin it on a foreigner, especially someone that had been acting erratically and had been having problems with several people in town. They probably really thought he did it (or at least didn't have any better suspects). Maybe if he had offered them 80k on first arrest before it hit the papers it would have helped, but if you really hadn't killed someone your first response probably wouldn't be to offer that kind of money. I can't imagine the police ignoring a viable suspect in a case this high profile for chump change, and the French police were also involved, making it harder still.

I'd say Giblet is about right on this story. He was acting like a total dick around town at the time, which involved the cops sometimes. The French lady was murdered and they either had no idea,or a very good idea who did it,but decided Olly would fit the bill with his recent sillyness. I believe the Belgian authorities were quite involved in the case,on Olly's side,so it looks like this pressure and the total lack of any evidence, resulted in the judge having to let him go. The passport being held stuff was simply to make it look like he was still guilty,to save face. They knew full well he would leave the country. They,in their eyes don't look daft and Olly goes free. Makes me think,we shouldn't be making a nuisance of ourselves here. You never know. I will say though, that Olly still owes my restaurant for a soda and a beer. $1.75. Thats without two years interest.

Since you're trying to sell your business, I suggest you not highlight such small debts, as it makes it look like the amount is important. Image
