Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

All the money, RRs, makeup, whitening creams and what have you can't make up for the fact that Cambodians are simply ill-mannered.

Not everyone is, but it's mostly true. So many people eat with their mouths open, and shovel stuff into their mouths. I'm not sure too many would know how to use a knife and fork. I had good table manners beaten into me by my mother in the 1970s. At that time Cambodians were getting beaten to death for complaining that they only got a few teaspoons of gruel. :?

It comes from the fact that nobody tells them. In Western culture, if somebody does something others dont like, they tell them. So people learn others dont like their behaviour, and normally change. In Cambodian culture, people normally dont tell them. So they dont know, and dont change. As a result, there are a lot of things which are unacceptable to Westerners, but acceptable to Cambodians.

If you try to tell them, in many cases, you are the one with the problem, not them. So it is difficult for them to even understand.

I could list many examples:

Think about how they drive.

Think about they way they throw trash everywhere.

A Cambodian came up to a Westerner, and said, you have a lot of hair on your arms. Then he grabbed some of the hair. The Westerner punched the Cambodian. The Cambodian didnt think there was anything wrong with what he was doing. It made the Westerner angry.

I was in a village, and had been sitting chatting with a group of people at a house for a while. All of the children got up and walked away. Someone said to me, do you know why all of the children went away? It was because an old lady was coming to the house. She tries to show her affection for the children by pinching them. The children dont like it, and avoid her. But nobody tells her.

You will sometimes come accross Cambodians who talk very loudly. It can be very annoying if you are traveling in a bus, and have to listen to them for a long time. Nobody tells them, so they just continue.

Taking this to the extreme. There are Cambodian people that other Cambodians say are crazy. Some do genuinely have mental problems. I believe there are some which technically dont have mental problems, but have taken their behaviour to the point where they are not fully accepted in society. Nobody tells them. They just say they are crazy.

A lot of what we learn in Western society comes from listening to others. Cambodians dont normally tell, and dont normally listen. Listening to others means losing face. So they lack a lot of those values which make a society civilised.
LOL. It's not that I disagree with everything you say, explorer, but it's too funny when you hold up the Australians as great civic world citizens who are so superior to Cambodians (and most other people.) Australians might tell you what they think, but I'm not sure that they listen any more than Cambodians. For example, when you post here, do you listen to the replies ?

As an aside, I have seen some terrible cases of poverty, violence, and child neglect in Australia. I have seen beautiful wilderness areas in Australia covered in rubbish. I have seen all the beer cans and plastic bottles that lie along the desert roads, due to Australians throwing their shit out of their car windows. Australians also talk loudly and are fking annoying sometimes. (Like everyone else.)
In real life Cambodia, I have noticed that Cambodians have become more attentive to where they throw their rubbish, and there are now things like litter bins in public spaces which are getting used. Everything will not change overnight, but there have been big changes in the attitude to litter.
I see this as a glass half-full and not a glass half-empty. :mulled:

@explorer. And this is plain weird. I'm not sure what you are trying to say. Are you saying that the westerner was right to punch someone for this ? :please:

But you have to wonder, what is the point of driving fancy cars and pretending to be up there with Jeff Bezos and Bill Ackman if you can't eat/ drive properly? I had to teach my girlfriend table manners. She would always speak with her mouth full of food or eat with her hands at upscale restaurants. She got super offended (like most Khmer do when you show them they are behaving like pigs) the first time. Now all I need to do is give her the look and she knows. Kinda like my parents used to do when I was... 4.

FYI, people struggle a lot more to keep a roof over their heads in California than in Cambodia. Enough with the Khmer Rouge excuse. It's getting old. If they are smart enough to cop a bunch of Bentleys and AMGs, then they are smart enough to learn basic social rules of proper etiquette.

A Louis Vuitton bag, a luxury car, and a fake diamond chandelier don't make you a respectable individual. Your manners however.

I am not saying he had a right to punch him. I am not saying that is what I would do. I am just saying that is what he did. In our culture people just wouldn't do that. Some people have less tolerance for things that annoy them than others.

Ok, correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that you are saying that in your culture, some people are not very tolerant, and when they get annoyed, they punch people ?

I m sure your wife appreciates the look you give her. No doubt she tanks her lucky stars every night that you lifted her to a level that you are no longer ashamed to be seen with her. And FYI California's rarely eat rat and live in million dollar homes. I am sure they struggle to put a Starbucks coffee in the cup holder of their Tesla. Perhaps I will go watch Pygmalion tonight or better yet why Don t you share the film with your gf, enjoy a fine Napa valley wine and tell her of your struggles.

You shouldn’t be bothered much by the people of Cambodia not eating, drinking, etc. in a way you prefer. Instead of considering them somehow uncivilized you need to realize the difference in how they were raised. We are not inherently superior, and if I was raised in the same circumstances I would behave just as a Khmer would.

I would suggest some of us could use a refresher on the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs. Table manners are about 4/5 of the way up the scale. The average Khmer aspires to be 1/2 way up the scale.
Needs

Physiological
Safety
Love and Belonging
Esteem
Self-Actualization

Yes, the Range Rover lady drives a car usually driven by someone with better table manners and on finer roads in countries that have better traffic enforcement and a more stringent licencing policy. I guess for some it is difficult to understand those good table manners don t matter as much as cold hard cash in some societies. If they did, most of us would be driving the RRs, Audis and Lexus'instead of a scooter.
