Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

HE Bans Traffic on Angkor Wat Road

BY PHAN SOUMY | MAY 4, 2016

Cars, vans, and other vehicular traffic will be barred from traveling along the stretch of road directly facing Angkor Wat, the country’s most iconic tourist attraction, Prime Minister HE announced on Facebook yesterday.

“From now on, only pedestrians and cyclists will be allowed to enter the road in front of Angkor Wat temple. No any other vehicles will be allowed to pass through the street, but firetrucks and ambulances will be allowed to enter during an emergency,” Mr. HE wrote.

Apsara Authority, which manages the Angkor site, began enforcing the ban at the beginning of the month, according to spokeswoman Chau Sun Kerya.

“The ban…was put in place about five or six years ago, but it wasn’t being enforced,” Ms. Kerya said. “The purpose of the ban is to organize the area in front of Angkor Wat, deal with traffic jams, make sure that the safety of visitors is being taken care of and prevent the destruction of the temple, as many vehicles pass by and park in that area everyday.”

The spokeswoman said the move had been warmly received by tourists, tour guides and tuk-tuk drivers.

What about taking some of the millions and millions of dollars that tourists spend on tickets to see this place and using it to upgrade the infrastructure? Where is the money going? Why is there crappy restaurants/disgusting loos right by a world attraction? Why does everything aimed at tourists look second rate and cheap? Someone is making a lot of money and its not being put back into this world class attraction.

They did.

They're blocking the section in front (though HS's 200 vehicle entourage sped straight through on Khmer new year), and they've build a large car park at the top of the loop road in the western side.
