Authorities Are Trying to Free Sidewalk in DaunPenh District

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Before i didn't really understand why expat always complained about locals taking over the sidewalk and put their stuff on it, because i got used to it. I have never been abroad and not really know how sidewalk is being used in the west. Moreover, i rarely walk in Phnom Penh, i drive motorbike most of the time. Just recently i started to walk more often. I walk from my house to Olympic stadium that made me realise that having no sidewalk to walk is suck. It is really dangerous to walk close to moving traffic. I hope the city hall could address this massive problem.

This Samouth. I usually walk if it is anything less than three kilometers bit SE Asia this sucks. Even in Siem Reap nowadays were everybody thinks they must have a ruddy big SUV and park it any which way.

I agree with you. People here don't like walking all else, i hope the increase of population will push people to walk and use public transportation rather than their own mean of transportation.

Haha, off all the things cluttering sidewalks they go for a single post that was planted into the fround with cement? Why not start with big stuff like cars, tuk tuks, motos, coolers, tables, chairs, etc.

Looks like someone didn't pay the "sign tax," that's all.

Interesting development. I remember years ago some clown suggested to abolish sidewalks because nobody walks anymore (except dogs and foreigners).

The worst offenders are the cars, esp Suv 's. Given who they belong too I wouldn't hope for too much. Systematic keying would be a good start.

Yeah im fed up of walking in the middle of the road when drunk, leaving Walkabout and going to GSM to get even more drunk. :) Only partly joking (i'm never drunk) but it's getting worse trying to walk from anywhere A to B! I've nearly been wiped out a few times by speeding wrong direction driving idiots, (moto's, tuk tuks and cars) while walking round heaps of moto's, SUV's parked up for eataries which themselves are taking up all of the sidewalk. Often took small compensatory joy in an imaginary scene involving me and a bulldozer. :whip:
