Australian nurse arrested under new surrogacy laws.

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I would expect all Cambo kids. The birth certificates are issued by the local Sangkat. They are signed and stamped. You need copies of them when you enroll in schools.

"So all Cambodian children have birth
certificates or only half barangs?"

UT's answer is spot on, although my two kid's
certificates came from Calmette but were verified by the Sangkat.

Even though Khmer society in general recognizes them as "halfbreeds" they are legally Khmer because of their mother and are entitled to all of the "privileges" of Khmer citizenship.

Only in this context, "half-breed" is typically seen as a Very Good Thing, not a disadvantage.

Sorry Stroppy, that hasn't been my kids' experience. All of those good qualities either have to do with having wealthy foreign fathers or else resembles that white cliche " they sure can sing and dance" about blacks. They're racist to the core.

Odd - I wonder if that's regional. Our godson is seen as blessed for being mixed-race and when discussed on the Khmer side of the family, it seems having a mixed-race child is even seen as a good thing for a single mother.

I understand your sentiment, Yootee, but your kids are going to be fine contributing members of society. Honestly.

Well I certainly hope UT's kids will be but I hope the same for mine. What family says within family is window dressing. The only other question that comes to mind is will there be a society worth contributing to?
