Australian Expat JAMES NEAL PASCOE Arrested in Phnom Penh for Selling Oranges & Orange Juice

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Did they go like : "Oh Oh Oh, there's an orange juice seller but he's barang, let's investigate !" ?
Why would you think anyone had reported him? He was holding the wrong visa for what he was doing. He was in luck with immigration, only got off with a caution. It could have been very worse. The law states, fine or and imprisonment, worst is deportation.
I feel sorry for him, and many comments on the post. He was only helping out is lady.
But it does make you think what you can and can’t do.
That's what the article says "After someone reported him".

And is it even considering as work as he's not earning any salary ? Except maybe his wife paying him in orange.
Apologies. But I think it may have been the police doing their job, and reporting him to immigration.
Work is work, even if voluntary with no pay. And to add to the fact that most expats would say any western business are working, mainly on the same lines.

How can work be work?
If I'm "retired" and have time on my hands, perhaps i chose to build a house or grow a hectare if vegetables because I like to and want to fill my time with something constructive....
Define work more precisely for me please. ( i make NO money).

Excellent point. I live rurally and work demands are placed upon me by necessity. What is the legal distinction between the duties of a husband and a field hand? I don't work for gainful employment, but to participate as a contributing member of my family just as my son and daughter do.

I understand what you are saying. But whatever and how a person define "work". seems it will be immigration, needed to satisfy.

It's not a secret or even difficult.

Work is any labor that constructively contributes to a commercial or social initiative. So, if you have a banana tree in your backyard, and you take care of it solely for the purpose of growing bananas for your family, that is not work. On the other hand, if someone takes those bananas you grew and sells them at the market, whether or not you get paid for it and no matter how many middlemen you put in between to disguise the effort, that is work.

Same job, but different intent. Stop trying to find loopholes. Most people know instinctively whether something is work or not, or could reasonably be considered work by a thinking person. If you have to ask, it is probably because you have realized someone might think it is work.

No, not at all. It is because those of us who have lived here a long time do not like to second guess either The Ministry of Interior or Foreign Affairs. It is their job to define and ours to comply. You're accusing the wrong party of loopholes.

I would assume giving people a bottle of orange juice, who in return give you cash, is pretty easy to classify as "work."

work for immigration purpose is "any activity where a person could reasonably expect remuneration"
e.g.
sitting at a table with products for sale.

All grey area's should have a fence, preferably blue , erected around it for further construction .
