Australian Gold Mine Project Gets Go-Ahead in Protected Phnom Prich National Wildlife Sanctuary
CEO News, Cambodia: The Australian mining company Emerald Resources have struck a deal with the Cambodian government, who will allow the company's Okvau Gold Project to go ahead in the midst of a protected wildlife park. The lease area, which is at present located in a protected conservation zone is to be rezoned by the authorities to a 'sustainable use zone' in order to allow the mining operation to legally go ahead within the Phnom Prich National Wildlife Sanctuary.
Recent joint venture and earn-in agreements, along with the new exploration licence granted, has expanded Emerald’s ground position in Eastern Cambodia from 374km2 to 1,500km2.
The Okvau Gold Project is situated within the Phnom Prich Wildlife Sanctuary. Under the Environmental Contract the MoE will undertake to rezone the project area from ‘Conservation Zone’ to ‘Sustainable Use Zone’.

Phnom Prich Wildlife Sanctuary, Mondulkiri is located amidst the Eastern Plains which is known for sprawling rain forests and beautiful rivers. It has an area of 2,225 kilometer squares. The sanctuary is home to some of Cambodia's endangered species: there are wide varieties of mammals, birds and reptiles. Protected species to be found in the sanctuary include tiger, Asian elephant, wild water buffalo, jungle cat, and deer, as well as bird species like the sarus, crane and giant ibises.

Gold mining is a notoriously dirty process extremely toxic to the environment. Emerald Resources has provided surety to the Cambodian Ministry of Environment, and signed contracts undertaking to restore the mine sites at the end of the lease, but there will inevitably be damage done to the surrounding environment, and destruction of natural wildlife habitats that cannot be restored. The mining company also plan to build new roads through the jungle, which will remain as a permanent fixture. These roads will also make it easier for logging companies to venture even deeper into the forest to cut hardwood trees in the previously protected area.

MACA drafts up mining contract for Okvau gold project in Cambodia
Posted by Daniel Gleeson on 30th January 2019

ASX-listed MACA has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a subsidiary of Emerald Resources to supply equipment and contract mining services at the Okvau gold project in Cambodia.

The MoU with Renaissance Minerals is subject to a final investment decision to develop the project by the Emerald Resources Board of Directors, MACA noted. A draft mining contract between MACA and Emerald, agreeing on all material terms, conditions, schedules and rates, will be executed upon this decision.

MACA’s proposed scope of work under the mining contract includes load, haul, drill and blast utilising 100-t class dump trucks, with the initial term of the contract aligned to the current schedule of seven years with an option to extend. This equates to around $220 million in revenue, MACA said.

On 1 May 2017, Renaissance announced the completion of the definitive feasibility study (DFS) on the development of a 2 Mt/y operation at Okvau. The DFS delivered an initial ore reserve of 14.3 Mt at 2 g/t Au for 907,000 oz of gold at an average all-in sustaining cost of $731/oz over an initial seven year life of mine.

Japanese companies to begin mineral extraction in Northeast
The Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (Jogmec) on Tuesday announced plans to exploit copper and zinc deposits in Stung Treng province, in the country’s northeast.

Jogmec, an incorporated administrative agency of Japan’s Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry, will be extracting the minerals in cooperation with another Japanese firm, Nittetsu Mining Co.

Both companies have been surveying the area for mineral deposits, Kyodo newsgroup reported last week.

The Cambodian government gave the exploration rights in April to Nittetsu Mining (Cambodia) Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Japanese firm.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy and Jogmec signed a memorandum of understanding on geological surveys. The organisation said it conducted studies to narrow down potential areas for mineral exploration. Following these studies, the company found the belt last year.

Jogmec and Angkor Gold Corp recently announced they had entered into a joint exploration agreement to explore Angkor’s Oyadao South license. Jogmec will invest $3 million over a three-year period to explore the site.

Japanese mining firm granted copper exploration licence
Thou Vireak | Publication date 02 September 2019 | 21:27 ICT
Japanese mining company Nittetsu Mining (Cambodia) Ltd on April 25 obtained a three-year copper exploration licence for Stung Treng province, Ministry of Mines and Energy spokesman Yos Monirath said.

The firm is set to begin exploration early next year and is currently conducting an environmental impact assessment (EIA), Monirath added.

Nittetsu Mining, a subsidiary of Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp (Jogmec), on August 26 held a workshop in collaboration with the provincial departments of Mines and Energy and Environment to discuss the project’s socio-environmental impact.

The licence allows the firm to explore for copper on 133sq km in Thala Barivat district’s Anlong Chrey commune.

“It [the EIA] begins with cooperation between the company and the ministry. Initial geological surveys found copper ore deposits in the area,” Monirath said.

Ham Kimkong, director of E&A Consultant Co Ltd, which obtained the rights to conduct the EIA for the Nittetsu Mining project, said the assessment will conclude by the end of this year and exploration could start early next year.

In 2016, Jogmec entered into a joint exploration agreement with Canadian mining firm Angkor Gold Corp to explore Angkor’s Oyadao South licence in Ratanakkiri province.

The agreement gave Jogmec the option to acquire 51 per cent of the licence for a total investment of $3 million in exploration expenditures over a three-year period.

Gold mining to begin next year: Ministry
Renaissance Minerals, a subsidiary of Australia-listed Emerald Resources, is expected to begin extracting gold in Cambodia’s Mondulkiri province next year, according to a high-ranking official at the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

The company is now building the infrastructure needed to begin mining, said Yos Monirath, director-general of the Ministry of Mines and Energy’s General Department of Mineral Resources.

“If things go as planned, we could start producing gold in early 2020. But if there are heavy rains or floods, production will likely begin later in the year,” he explained.

In July last year, the government granted the firm an Industrial Mining Licence covering 11.5 square kilometres at the Okvau gold project, in Mondulkiri’s Mondul Seima district. The licence has a validity of 15 years and can be renewed for 10 more years up to two times in accordance with Cambodian law.

In a quarterly report issued recently, Emerald Resources said it has successfully completed the resettlement of 62 local families as well as site works to remove abandoned structures away from the mining area.

The company also said it has completed the installation of a security fence around the development area, ensuring the safety of personnel, visitors and wildlife.

Construction of a 35-tonne bridge across the Prek Te River, upgrades to an existing rural road and the construction of a new section of planned road have commenced which will allow all-year continuous access to the site, it said.

It's all go, and it's not small.
Full up to date report here.
https://www.emeraldresources.com.au/sit ... 953111.pdf

An ASX "Trading Halt" notification just popped up on my Bloomburg screen. (a "must" for serious environmentalists)
It often signals that bad news is about to come out - but i fear in this case it probably signals a "positive " develpment.

Small possibility it may have something to do with their $60 million financing arrangement.
Their Canadian financier, Sprott Resource, seems to be on a downward slope. Share price halved in 6 months since deal with Emerald was announced. Fall accelerated last week.

Fingers crossed for "bad" news.
Serious environmental destruction is inevitable with this project - and Cambodia's economy is unlikely to benefit enough to outweigh that permanent cost.

We should know what the trading halt is about later today.

Four provinces open for gold mine exploration
The Ministry of Mines and Energy has called on local and international companies to apply for licences to study and explore gold mining in four provinces believed to be rich in gold.

According to a statement signed on November 9 by Mines and Energy Minister Suy Sem, local and international companies should apply for licences to study and explore gold mining in four provinces.

It said that the four areas include 49.25 kilometres in Stung Treng province’s Thalaborivath district and another 32 kilometres in Thalaborivath district, 41.58 kilometres in Battambang province’s Phnom Proek district and 93.94 kilometres straddling between Kratie province’s Sambour district and Kampong Thom province’s Sandan district.

The statement said that companies can receive application forms from the ministry until January 30, 2020.

Ean Meak, director of Battambang provincial Mines and Energy department, said two areas in Samlot and Phnom Proek districts are being studied and explored for gold.

“But now the government found and opened another new area for mine exploration,” Mr Meak said. “It is a gold mine.”
