The story is now breaking in the Australian press. They say it is because of a flash flood "near" Kampot...

A YOUNG Victorian woman living in Perth has died while on holiday in Cambodia.

Kristy Blackney drowned, reportedly in a flash flood, near Kampot in the south-east Asian country on Sunday.

The 24-year-old with a “heart of gold’’ grew up in Inverloch, in South Gippsland, before moving to Perth last year.

When the AU media report she died "reportedly in a flash flood" I suspect you are their source. Sigh.

LoL, at least they're referring to us as "local media."

And mad respect to her friend Kiara Mcnally (and donors of course) for running such a successful GoFundMe!

It is definitely the most successful Cambodia-related fund raising we've ever seen, raising almost $21,000 in less than 15 hours.

Wow, the international media is going hard with the "Kristy Blackney died in a flood in Cambodia.. "

I would like to see some statements from the owner of Arcadia Backpackers Kampot, as it all sounds like a lot of random speculation, and we even have the brother of the deceased saying he has trouble believing she would have drowned, being such a good swimmer.

We've received requests left right and center to remove everything from images of the discovery of her body, to even her Facebook pics and posts that suggest she could have been "partying" in Kampot at the time of her death...

I wish people could realize we aren't trying to sensationalize anything, we just want to know what really happened like a lot of other people out there, and we're not as quick to just rule it out as a "flood accident" as some are, which includes her own brother on here who doesn't seem fully convinced that she just drowned.

Personally, I'm very undecided right now, but it seems odd that she would be a victim of a flood, and somehow wash up right where she was staying the next morning as late as 10AM.

Being found floating that late in the morning would kind of suggest nobody was looking for her, because if they were she would have likely been found right at dawn when the sun came up.

Any CEO members in Kampot willing to share any info from around town regarding this case?

First mention of Kristy Blackney in the Cambodian English press:

"Kristy Anne Blackney, a 24-year-old Australian, was found dead in the Kampot River in Kampot province’s Teuk Chhu district on Sunday morning.

According to the National Police, the owner of Arcadia Backpackers called district police after discovering Ms. Blackney’s body in the river in front of the guesthouse.

Another interesting thing is that it appears that Kristy Blackney got a 3-month Cambodia visa from the consulate in Aranyaprathet, Thailand near the border of Poipet, Cambodia.

It's a TF visa, single entry, issued from the Cambodian Consulate in Sa Kaew, which appears to be valid for traveling within Cambodia for a full 3 months.

Is that new? I don't recall coming across it in the past. Presumably it's for tourism, as it has "NOT PERMITTED FOR EMPLOYMENT" stamped across it.

If anyone is familiar with it, what's the cost?

It seems different from the 3-month e-visa, which is "valid" for 3 months, but only allows you to travel within Cambodia for 30 days, sometime within that 3-month validity period.

From the Kampot Immigration page:

Image

Looks like it was put in her passport on the 14th of August, the same day she was stamped into the country.

If she was found in the water at the hostel and the river was swollen and fast flowing is it possible she was swimming and drowned without being carried downstream?
Was she alone when she went in the water?
Was she intoxicated?
Why wasn't she missed?
Does Arcadia have CCTV? I think it does as it was used in the rape allegation incident. So does the footage show her leaving with anyone? Is the area towards the riveside covered?
