Australian Expat Peter Maitland Has Leg Amputated After Motorbike Accident in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Phnom Penh, Cambodia: On September 16, 2016 (late Thursday night) an Australian expat from Queensland, Pete Mate, was in a motorbike accident which crushed his leg.

Image

He was riding with a friend, when a Lexus with no lights on ran into him, knocking him off his bike and completely crushing his right leg, leaving it barely attached by a string of flesh. His friend escaped with minor injuries.

He was in a familiar neighborhood, and shouted for help, and the nearby Tuk-Tuk drivers who he knew sped after the hit and run Lexus driver and got the police to stop him a few blocks away (a miracle in itself).

Peter Maitland says that after the car hit him and slammed on his brakes, the driver then tried to run him over, and he was lucky to get out of the way.

Peter Maitland moved to Phnom Penh, Cambodia back in 2014 to teach primary school. He told reporters that he and his fiancee, Elena Belevtseva, had recently bought property in Kampot and were planning on opening up a resort. She was already there and he was planning on moving there in a week.

He was rushed to Calmette Hospital. It didn't take long for them to realize that they were out of their league, and he was transferred to Royal Phnom Penh Hospital, were he had 4 surgeries in an attempt to save his leg.

They also realized he needed better care and he was flown to Bumrungrad International Hospital in Thailand, where he had 5 more surgeries.

He realized again that he needed better treatment, and was recently flown to Mater Hospital in Brisbane, Australia.

He has now received the unfortunate news that he will have to have his leg amputated after all.

Even though this experience has been horrific for Mr Maitland, he has nothing but good things to say about Cambodia and its people, plans to come back and hopes his story doesn't scare people away from visiting this wonderful country.

This whole ordeal will easily cost him well over $100,000 or a lot more, but luckily Pete Maitland is a smart expat and has INSURANCE, which presumably will cover most if not all of the medical expenses.

Cambodia Expats Online wishes Peter Maitland a speedy recover and hopes he can return to Cambodia soon.

Here are some HORRIFIC images of the injuries to his leg:

What a tragic story that could happen to anyone.

He takes it like a champ. Wonder how he will feel about this when all the morphine wears off.

Wishing you a speedy transition Peter. Best of luck in a horrible situation. You seem like the kind of guy who will somehow be stronger for this most unfortunate event. Best of every thing to you here forward.

Tragic but this guy is a Champ! I really hope he had a licence and expat insurance so that the insurance company doesn't try to wiggle it's way out of this one! Wasn't this the accident with the Toyota Camry and not a Lexus!?

Hmmmm, I saw both car/Lexus mentioned. Let me look into it further...

He says the moral of the story is to get insurance and to NOT TRUST LEXUS DRIVERS, so not sure if he's talking about the vehicle that hit him or not.

I didn't see a Camry identified anywhere...

And to add insult to injury, he's getting married in December.

I thought GoFundMe was all the rave these days? He's managed to raise almost $20,000 so far! He'll almost certainly hit his goal of $22,000 within a day or so, I'd imagine.

And yes, what a saint. I'd be cursing everyone if that shit happened to me. From now I will refer to him as Saint Peter.

What makes you think he's using a Cambodian insurance company?
Silence, exile, and cunning.
