Australian English Teacher at Western University Jonathan Bond from Adelaide Dies at Home from Apparent Drug Overdose

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Death of a barang is normally front page news in print editions, not headline but bottom 1/3rd at least. Very least page 2 or 3 if it's just a 'heart attack' of an elderly sex tourist in a guesthouse.

It's good unusual news in that it's death and it's death of a foreigner whose died in Cambodia. Your average local café customer who may rent a paper for 500r for a flick through would be intrigued that a westerner could lead such a lifestyle and die in Cambodia. Opposite to the stereotype.

Remember also that a Cambodian newspaper has 2-4 broadsheet pages daily dedicated to traffic accidents, couple of pages of serialised stories, page of dubious health advice perhaps. Page of funny photos. Lots of advertising, classifieds etc. Not easy for them to fill a broadsheet.

An article in a paper or on a website can be bought by anyone, for example if you're opening a new school or restaurant or have a new product to sell. Any page or wording and it won't be labelled as an 'advertorial'. These articles are usually innocuous and obvious but I'm sure they could be more devious.

It's shocking to some of us that a barang teacher could be a hard drug addict. It's even more shocking to Cambodian parents that a highly paid professional tie wearing teacher could be. Cambodian teachers are badly paid but it's a respectful profession.

Additionally Western are a big advertiser in newspapers (as are most chain international schools) Western are currently running front page colour premium ads on 2 or 3 local papers about a new building/campus. Front page of Phnom Penh Post Khmer for sure (have the 2 local papers run this yet?) and I'd guess you could find a Western advert in every national paper at least once this week. (If not every paper everyday on less expensive pages..although perhaps not in Nokorwat??)

Laurent Te is an Okhna. He's portrayed as a good guy (as all Okhna are) his Western School/Uni empire is pretty extensive. He also owns/owned Le West KTV (a high class hooker 'KTV' place with a menu of hostesses. [Don't all flock there I think it's just this year been knocked down]) I'm sure he's got other interests and strings of connection.

The reporters would know that. They'll just contact a secretary or be contacted to see if the Tes want this story run or not, if they don't want it run the reporter or newspaper will be paid off. Or of course their editors will tell them not to run a story as this involves a big advertiser.

Kinda relatedly they'll very, very rarely ever be a follow up to an article. It's yesterday's news almost immediately. We'll never be told the findings of the toxicology report or if the police inspected a needle or found evidence of drugs.
It was a good bit of gossip to them but it's over now.

Rama wrote:What is notable (and interesting to me) with the reporting of this death, in my opinion, is actually the dearth of reporting in the local Cambodian press.

Beside the nkdnews.com article and a 3 minute clip on a morning edition of Hang Meas News TV there isn't any other mention on other news outlets of his death.

The only other website that ran this story that I've come across is nokorwat website which is the indepth version of nkdnews.com (and then Nokorwat website publishes as Nokorwat newspaper the following day)

hangmeasdaily.com the website of Hang Meas TV didn't publish an online article after running the story in their morning TV news, nor did they re-run the story in the afternoon news programs (that I noticed)
All the other big local media outlets (koh Santepheap, dap etc.) don't seem to have run this story. Not even the despicable arey-news.com or police website.

In the morning TV clip (which I won't link to) there were numerous reporters within the crime scene sticking their camera phones in etc.

Seems pretty likely to me that Laurent of Le West KTV and Western International paid them all of to keep this out of most local papers and websites.

It's in the Hang Meas video. He slipped down the side of the bed, between the bed and the wall.

Wow, Rama, that is very insightful into the local Khmer press shenanigans.

I'm going to assume you're spot on with this. It really doesn't take much imagination to realize that it was oddly not covered and your description makes perfect sense.

Extra odd for this story, as it's been covered fairly well in the West.

And, after we were just talking about how morbid the original article in the Daily Mail was, they've written a new article a few hours ago, which focus much more on what a tragic loss Jonathan Bond was, and not so much on the drugs and pointing out how messy his room looked.

We rarely hear of any toxicology reports, pathology is in its infancy here.

MSN at least mentions they got the information from an "expat website," and I think it's safe to assume they're not referring to Boomer's topsy-turvy Google Translations, LoL, who also didn't even mention he was found in his BED:

"An Australian man has died in Cambodia, reportedly from a drug overdose.

The English teacher from Adelaide, Jonathan Bond, 24, was found dead in his bed in Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital, this week, according to an expat website that quoted a local news outlet.

In Australia I don't think they are allowed to post medicare, bank details and passport details.
Plus the family and friends didn't like it. The thought of someone going through your sons belongings and then giving the pics to media is disgusting.

Thank you for your kind words. He was more then these articles made him out to be, he was a really great person.
The family are trying their best to deal with this, the media can be very hard. :(
