Feel sorry? Why? I don't have a problem with people using drugs once in a while. I don't have a problem with most drugs to be honest and would prefer the government's to legalise most drugs but Ice is something else. More than 6 packets of ice and some other drugs is not for personal use is it? You suggest the police should just let it go? Long prison sentence for the dealers and rehab for the users is the only right way to deal with this. I have personally seen what ice does with people. Let me tell you it's not like any other drug and I hope you never have to experience anyone you know having an addiction to it.

Because he is a small fish and law allow 6 yrs in prison ( if I remember well), here have many bigger fish but they are looks like untouchables. I didn`t say he is innocent just why this news is big sensation. If a local guy does do a same case this news 3 lines in Phnom Penh Post`s police blog or no news. Yes 6 packages more then personaly use. If few months later court will do sentence 6-10 months prison to him ok, right, but if sentence will be year or more, my feel very sorry him.
I also seen what ice does with peoples. Rehab for users? Oh c`mon where and which rehab? U ever see rehab place in Cambodia? I visited Prey Speu few times. It is not rehab but prison and horror place, with 3-15 yrs children. There killing around 10 persons per year. Don`t have realy world standard level rehab in Cambodia :x
Be yourself, no matter what they say!

Confirmed. On the road on the way back from Otres. This is their 3rd visit here and they tried everything to negotiate the fine down. They were given only 2 options 1/ Pay the fine in full, NO DISCOUNT, NO NEGOTIATION
or
2/ Go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200.
They chose option 1.

Still not a bad deal when you compare it with the headache of getting caught with weed in most countries where it's illegal.

True, if you want to avoid trouble with the police, start by wearing a helmet especially if you are carrying drugs. I personally believe weed should be legal but alas it is not so you take your risks and try to minimize the chance of being caught. I have zero empathy for meth users or dealers, big or small time.

If you want to avoid trouble with the police, apart from not locking up people in a house, try not carrying drugs nor using illegal drugs. Fuck your empathy, or no empathy to users of a certain drug, both weed and ice are illegal.

Fears for former Canberra public servant held in Cambodian jail
By Steve Evans
15 January 2019 — 11:02am
There are fears for the welfare of a former Canberra public servant imprisoned in Cambodia on drugs charges.

Gary Knowles, now 73, was arrested in the south-east Asian country more than a year ago. Now one of his former colleagues, worried about his health given the harsh reputation of Cambodian prisons, has called on the Australian government to intervene.

Peter Harris, a former director at the IT group in the Attorney-General's department who was Mr Knowles's boss when the two worked together in Canberra, wants the government to do more for its imprisoned former employee.

While Mr Knowles worked for the federal government, he was seconded to the Thai government to install a computer system meant to help disrupt the illicit drugs route to Australia.

After working in Thailand, he retired and settled in neighbouring Cambodia, according to his former boss.

But in December 2017, he was arrested at a resort in the south of Cambodia, along with his girlfriend.

Local newspapers identified the accused pair as Robert Gary Knowles, then aged 72, and his Cambodian girlfriend Meas Phary, 28. The newspapers printed pictures of the two of them with a stash of drugs.

The police were said to have seized six packages of crystal meth, five tablets of ecstasy and nine boxes of aphrodisiacs. Paraphernalia used to consume drugs was also displayed.

Since then Mr Knowles has vanished from public view. His family told The Canberra Times that neither he nor they wanted publicity.

But his former boss says he fears for Mr Knowles' safety in a Cambodian jail. Conditions are likely to be bleak in the extreme, with severe overcrowding and minimal medical aid for a man in his 70s. He may well die in prison.

Mr Harris concedes Mr Knowles was arrested on drugs charges, but says the amounts allegedly in his possession were relatively small and not those of a major drug dealer.

He says that despite the charge, the Australian government should do more for one of its citizens and former employees.

"It is amazing that the Foreign Minister has done nothing since Gary was incarcerated. No trial, no hearing, nothing. He is 73 years old and the alleged amount of narcotics was trivial - he was obviously not a dealer", Mr Harris says.

He wrote to Julie Bishop last year when she was foreign minister, saying "he deserves some special assistance and support from Australia as a result of his subsequent 'downhill' spiral attributable to the Australian government sending him to SE Asia.

"Please give this man some humane assistance. He needs medical and psychological assistance at the very minimum."

In its response, the department wrote: "Please be reassured that his welfare is receiving the concerted attention of consular officials in Phnom Penh [the Cambodian capital] and Canberra."

A Google translate.

We visit him every month and give him a toothbrush and toothpaste. The Australian government cannot do much more cause we are busy trying to save 40 Billion dollars to buy submarines and pay ex prime-ministers and ex members of parliament their superannuation and perks.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

His subsequent 'downhill' spiral was caused by the gov't posting him to Thailand?
