Driver arrested for alleged involvement in fatal hit-and-run

Phnom Penh police chief Lieutenant General Sar Thet said authorities have today arrested a driver with an Audi SUV allegedly involved in a deadly hit-and-run incident that killed two young girls earlier this month.

Lt. Gen Thet said police identified Someth Sokun Rathvatey as the owner of Audi SUV 2AF-5659, and she was captured near Ly Yong Phat Bridge in Chroy Changvar district during lunchtime.

“We are now questioning the driver. She did not confess so I cannot give any certain information for now,” he said. “Police are still searching for another driver.”

On December 11, two young girls, Phoan Pirada and Ken Kora were struck by an Audi SUV along a quiet street in Ronas Village on their way home after their English class in Chroy Changva district’s Koh Dach commune.

While lying on the road with injuries, the two girls were then struck again by a passing Toyota Highlander and killed on the spot. Both drivers fled the scene. These incidents were captured in CCTV footage.

Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday charged the driver of an SUV over a hit-and-run accident which killed two young girls in Chroy Changva district on December 11.

Deputy prosecutor Kuch Kimlong identified him as Dol Sarith, 38, noting that he was charged with careless driving which caused the deaths of people and driving away after the accident.

He added that Sok Nov, 60, the owner of a Toyota Highlander who was arrested with the accused on Tuesday, was not charged because he was not responsible for it.

“We only charged the driver and not the owner of the vehicle because he was not involved,” Mr Kimlong said, noting that both will appear before an investigating judge today.

On December 11, two young girls, Phoan Pirada and Ken Kora, were reportedly struck by an Audi SUV along a quiet street in Ronas village on their way home after their English class in Chroy Changva district’s Koh Dach commune.

While lying on the road with injuries, the two girls were then struck again by a passing Toyota Highlander and killed on the spot.

Both drivers fled the scene but the incidents were captured on CCTV.

The incident prompted search efforts called by National Police Chief General Neth Savoeun after one victim’s family penned a letter to Prime Minister HE asking for intervention.

Colonel Bun Satya, chief of the municipal police minor crimes bureau, later clarified that only Sarith and Nov, who were in the Toyota Highlander, were involved in the fatal accident while the Audi SUV driver was cleared .

“An Audi SUV driver was allowed to go home on Monday, after being questioned. He was found not to be involved in the accident,” he said.

Strange how the stories change as time goes on. RIP and condolences to the girls' families. Tragic.
