Attempted murder with meat cleaver at Phnom Penh International Airport
Businessman attacked with cleaver at airport
7 July 2017
A 25-year-old suspect will be sent to court to face attempted murder charges after allegedly attacking a senior staff member of ING Holdings Co Ltd yesterday with a cleaver at the Phnom Penh International Airport, according to an airport official and police.
Khek Norinda, spokesman for Cambodia Airports, confirmed the attack took place yesterday at 8:30 am in the public area outside the terminal.
“The aggressor used a cleaver kitchen knife,” he said in an email. “It has been reported that neither one of them were passengers.”
Norinda said the attacker was arrested by onsite police and handed over to Por Sen Chey district police. The victim was taken to a hospital.
Chea Sovann, deputy district police chief, identified the victim as Keo Sotha, 52, assistant to ING Holdings Chairman Ing Bun Hoaw. The suspect was identified as Keo Phearum, 25, who had been employed at the airport for three days.
“The victim was hacked multiple times in the head, left hand [and] index finger,” he said. “His finger was almost cut off.”
After the attack, the suspect allegedly surrendered.
“We don’t know the real motive yet,” he added. “But he told us that he had been to a drug rehabilitation [centre] . . . He didn’t know the victim.”...

The suspect.
At 8:30am, 6 July 2017, at Phnom Penh International Airport, the suspect, identified as 25 year old Keo Phirum, took a knife (cleaver) from his bag and attacked Keo Sitha,51. Mr Sitha, a driver working for tycoon Eung Bunhoaw of ING Holdings, was at the airport to pick up some passengers. He was badly wounded and was taken to Royal Phnom Penh Hospital for treatment.
The motive for the brutal attack has not yet been elucidated, and it is not known if the suspect knew the victim, but there are suggestions that the suspect is suffering from mental illness.

Businessman Hacked With Meat Cleaver at Airport
Photos supplied by police show Mr. Sitha with deep gashes to the head and hand. He was hospitalized and receiving treatment for his injuries on Friday and was expected to make a full recovery, Mr. Sarah said.
“The suspect confessed to hacking [the victim] because he felt like he wanted to hack someone, and that morning he saw the victim who had a similar look to someone that he wanted to hack,” Mr. Saran said.
The mother of the alleged attacker, Keo Phearum, 25, told police her son had a history of mental illness, he said.
