Another mass food poisoning in Kratie

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

A lot of bad news coming out of Kratie recently, with many reported incidents of mass poisoning by food, water and rice wine. In this case, the authorities seem to have rapidly identified the culprit.

Food poisoning in Kratie
26 May 2018
After attending a forum by the provincial Department of Commerce 53 children and 22 women were afflicted with food poisoning and required medical treatment. The forum was held on the evening of May 25 in Chong Krong commune, Chet Borei district, Kratie province.

Hang Channy, Chet Borei’s district governor, stated that the victims are recovering well and some have left the hospital to return home.

The provincial health department suspects that the cause of the food poisoning was caused by the snacks at the forum (bread topped with butter, sausage, and egg), especially since Mr Channy was told by villagers that some of the snacks seemed rancid. They were bought from a newly-opened shop in Kratie.

This was only a week ago: 11yo girl from Kratie died from eating a hotdog.

Refrigerated or frozen food is often transported in small quantities to the provinces in polystyrene or orange ice-boxes. Sometimes they are left in the sun before or after the transportation. Once the product arrives at destination, it is often kept at room temperature or in iceboxes full of water and bacteria. There is almost zero awareness among the population about keeping certain products cold, or the dangers of defrosting and refreezing products, especially meat. So, not surprising that people get poisoned really.

Refrigeration and freezing is new to a lot of people in the countryside, so there needs to be more information via news or social media IMO.

Yes, the traditional dried sausages that are seen hanging in the market are not the same as the processed, imported sausages that are becoming increasingly popular.

Yeah, this is supposed to be what the kid ate. Pretty sure they need to be kept refrigerated.

^^^ Which is not the same as the dried meats that they are used to (which require no refrigeration).
