Angkor Officials Deny Beating Mentally Ill Man
The government body that manages the Angkor Archaeological Park yesterday denied local media reports accusing its officials of beating a mentally ill man unconscious, shifting blame to youth at a nearby pagoda who allegedly did it because the man was causing a disturbance.
Long Kosal, a spokesman for the Apsara Authority, told Khmer Times that the news accounts accusing its officials – who are supposed to protect the sprawling temple complex in Siem Reap province – of tying the man’s hands behind his back and beating him unconscious were completely false.
“It is not right that they accused our officials of beating the mentally ill man because our officials are not the kind of people who like to use violence. The victim caused the problem by himself,” he said.
He explained that the 25-year-old victim caused a disturbance Friday morning after he tied his bicycle to the window of the Southeast Angkor pagoda and began shouting, disturbing visitors who then beat him out of anger...
