US$1 and US$5 bills going out of circulation?

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

US$1 and US$5 bills going out of circulation?

Post by Matthew Robinson »

As most probably know, the National Bank of Cambodia gave banks and MFIs until 31 August to 'collect' all US$1 and US$5 notes for 'shipping out of the country' in order to promote wider use of the Khmer Riel. I've noticed that shops have recently given me all my small change in Riel when I presented then with, say, a US$20 bill or a US$50 bill. Has anyone had any experience of any traders, shops, tuk tuk and taxi drivers, banks, MFIs etc refusing to accept these two smaller US dollar bills?

Supermarkets in Siem Reap are mostly giving change in Riel but still accept $1s and $5 and occasionally will use these notes in change. Result is my wallet is filled to bursting with Riel - every time there is $1 change I get at least 4 1000 riel notes. Other shops do not seem to care one way or another - possibly because many of them do not use banks.

I have noticed it, lots of 5,10 and 20k riel notes seem to be offered in change.

5k are the new $1 (give or take) and 20K is the new $5.

Wait till they start pricing in riel and giving change in a mix of $'s and Riel, after a few beers it could start getting tricky.

Got a handful of dollar bills. Not having any luck using them in Battambang, although I am getting a lot of sellers trying to off their $1 bills to me in change.

If you have trouble getting rid of $1 or damaged $5 then use one of those machines that take cash to top up your phone.

Anyone seen the new 15000 Riel Notes? I had one the other day. (about $3.75 is the answer to your next question)
The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never allow the dumb ones to lead the pack.

Received one about 8 months ago and haven't seen another since. The slightly ridiculous size aside, I quite liked it.
