American Robert Draper Dies in Cambodia of a Stroke After Racking Up a $3,000 Medical at Calmette Hospital

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Very true.

Seems like it could just be a matter of time until Calmette also starts turning people away unless they have have their insurance card with them upon check-in.

I guess the whole thing kind of irks me that his sister appears to be trying to raise $4,000 dollars to get his ashes back, meanwhile leaving an unpaid $3,000 bill with the hospital that tried to save his life.

The corpse must still be at calmette, so bills might have to be paid for release.

1/ I totally support Calmette and I think they should be paid for their good work.
2/As a cost comparison, here, in another recent case, the family and friends were raising £1000 to get the ashes home.

I read it as the now quoted $4000 comprises of $3000 hospital bill plus $1000 for c remation transportation cost to america.

How much do locals pay, i mean say if you forgo any buddhist ceremony, the cost of death certificate, cremation and some documention registering the ashes and urn as human remains?

I hope you're right about that.

I just didn't think it would be that cheap for getting the body back.

Well, upon further inspection, I think it's even more unclear about what money was used for what.

Either way, it seems they got his cremated body back and at some previous point before this post, the money that was already raised went towards his medical bills (didn't say how much).

I knew Bob and it was the main reason I now own expat health insurance. He was a character, not unlike most of the expats I meet in Cambodia. Too bad they didn't spread his ashes here and give the money to the young family he left behind, RIP Bob

Condolences.

Are we sure they are aware of his family here? It seems all too common for expats in Cambodia to have secret lives here that nobody back home knows about.
