Michael Edward Harris should extradited back to the US within 12 hours.

The American soldier who escaped to Cambodia facing charges of child pornography and child abuse in the United States will be deported back to his home country today, according to Uk Hai Sela, investigations head at the Ministry of Interior’s immigration department.

Hai Sela said Michael Edward Harris, who was arrested last Tuesday in Kratie province, will be flying to Incheon, South Korea, on a flight just before midnight.

He will be accompanied by two US Air Marshals and will then transfer to a flight to the US, according to Hai Sela.

“All I know is from this morning from the US Embassy,” said Hai Sela, who added that Harris was still being held at the capital’s immigration department.

US Embassy spokesman Jay Raman declined to comment.

Harris entered Cambodia on January 17, skipping bail in Orlando, Florida, where he was facing child pornography charges.

Harris started working as a dog trainer in Sihanoukville under the alias “Mike Dobbs”, but his identity was uncovered after his ex-wife, Denise Diaz, posted a US media report about him in a Cambodian online forum.

US Army Deserter Deported to Face Charges

U.S. Army deserter Michael Harris, who sparked a two-week manhunt in Cambodia when he was found to be living in Sihanoukville after fleeing charges of child sex abuse and possession of child pornography, was due to be deported back to the U.S. early Wednesday morning, police said.

Uk Heisela, chief of investigations at the Interior Ministry’s immigration department, said he was proud of Cambodian police for tracking down and apprehending the 34-year-old in Kratie City on October 28 after he initially evaded arrest in Sihanoukville two weeks earlier.

“This was a successful effort by our police to have arrested the soldier in Cambodia after he fled across many countries because he was involved in child rape,” Mr. Heisela said, adding that the fugitive would be handed over to the U.S. Marshals Service.

“We will bring Michael Harris to Phnom Penh International Airport at 11 p.m. and he will be sent back to his country at about 12 a.m. via [South] Korea on an Eva Air plane, accompanied by two U.S. [marshals].”

Wayne Hall, a U.S. Army media relations officer, said by email Tuesday that he did not know if Mr. Harris would first face desertion charges or be sent to Orlando, where he fled bail on January 17 to avoid 44 counts of possession of child pornography.

“I do not have any specific answers yet,” Mr. Hall said. “However, [in light of his] background I would suggest that desertion may very well be the least severe of the charges he faces.”

Mr. Harris is also charged with sexually abusing two children of his ex-wife, Denise Diaz.

Ms. Diaz last month learned through social media that her former husband was working as a dog trainer in Sihanoukville and alerted authorities.

“I would like all his charges heard at the same time” in order to expedite his prosecution, she said via email from her home in Kentucky. “I just hope the United States Judicial System doesn’t fail.”

A summary of the events that have happened in this case:







Police in Cambodia said last week they arrested a former Yavapai County resident identified by media there as a U.S. Army deserter wanted in the state of Florida for offenses involving child pornography.

Col. Oum Phy, deputy police chief in northeastern Kratie province, said Michael Edward Harris was arrested there Tuesday at the request of the Interior Ministry, though he did not know why. Interior Ministry officials could not be contacted for more details.

The Khmer Times in Cambodia reported U.S. Marshals arrived Tuesday to escort Harris on flights back to Orlando, Florida.

Court documents in Orlando show Harris was arrested in February 2013 on 44 counts of possessing child pornography. According to the arrest affidavit, investigators determined that Harris had downloaded to his computer eight files containing child pornography. They executed a search warrant of his home in March 2013 and found a thumb drive with more pornographic images, it said.

Harris posted an $8,400 bond. When he failed to show up for a January 2014 hearing, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Harris' Army superior, Jason Studer, told an investigator he received an email from Harris saying his car could be found in a parking garage at Orlando International Airport. Studer located the car and found that it had been at the airport since Jan. 17, the same day Harris reportedly entered Cambodia, the court documents said.

Harris' ex-wife, Denise Diaz, launched a Facebook page to track down her former spouse, sho she said grew up in Mayer. One of her postings said Harris had been a military police officer and a drill sergeant.

Diaz said she received information in March from a credit card company following up on a credit card application Harris is believed to have submitted. Diaz said he used some of her information on the credit card application. She later obtain more information, including the Internet address of the computer used to apply for the credit card, showing as Hanoi, Vietnam.

She started posting information about her ex-husband on Facebook pages for groups in Vietnam and Cambodia.

"Literally within minutes, I started receiving messages," Diaz said. She contacted authorities.

An English-language newspaper, The Cambodia Daily, reported that Harris had been working as a dog trainer under the alias Michael Dobbs in the seaside town of Sihanoukville, which he fled about two weeks ago when someone identified him.
