American Beach Bum William Barron Arrested in Cambodia

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

yes, they are doing it even to old guys near 70 riding in tuktuks.
How are you violating traffic regulations by riding in a tuktuk ? Or do you mean that they are stopping tuktuks to search foreigners ?

On the positive side, if they are stopping all tuktuks with old guys in them, they won't have much time left to hassle motorbikes . :stir:

Hopefully, this too will pass.

Well, this is very interesting - seriously.(F'king implications are heavy.)

Less seriously, do they search the tuktuk drivers ? Most of them seem to sell/take drugs. Or is this a deal between tuktuk drivers and police ?
What is going on in S'ville ? Very very strange.

I don't think it's particularly strange. There have been multiple, high-profile stories in the media over the past year concerning criminal behavior of foreigners in that area. Russian mobsters are the obvious examples of late but many other nationalities as well. An eventual crackdown on all those now deemed undesirable was inevitable. I don't know why anyone would be surprised that locals are getting different treatment from authorities than foreigners. Nor is it surprising that such a crackdown opens up yet another opportunity for any corrupt police to extort money from those who are perceived to have more money to extort. SHV will eventually live and die economically by middle class Chinese tourist numbers, not the drunken sexpat Western retirees or low-end hippie backpacker brigades that have occupied the place over the past decade. The later groups won't be missed.

And here, dear listeners, is another perfect example of irony.
Please explain this irony, O professor Imageopcorn:
(Have my theory, but would love you to expand on this since irony on forums is easily misunderstood. Also, when irony is unintentional, is it still irony ?)
I suspect your theory would be 'on the money' (idiom: correct) - Gavin having to complain on CEO because no one 'on the other forum' will care.

The irony being that, apart from being a reasonable bloke, Gavin is one of the members of the other forum that is not greatly known for giving a toss (idiom: not caring).
Bodge: This ain't Kansas, and the neighbours ate Toto!

SV is going to have to be content w/the cheap (old & young) demographic until the 5 hrs from PP problem is taken care of & I see nothing on the horizon.

Consider it done. Sihanoukville airport is open for civil aviation. Bayon is flying to Phnom Penh for $1 tickets + $26 tax. It's a 30 minute flight.

I am serious.

How many people are they going to take off the road/day 100, 150 max ? .... Meh. They're flying a notoriously dangerous model of a small turboprop. I'd still rather take my chances in a taxi. How long do you think the tix will be a dollar for ? Now if we get Air Asia, VN Air, & BKK Air flying in, the place will boom.

Do you think the Chinese tourists in Siem Reap agree with you about taking the taxi? Angkor flies from SR to SV. The tickets are clearly a dollar as an opening price, I'm with you on that. But how many years until there's an international airport connecting to China in SV?

If the flights and tickets to SV are the only things keeping Sihanoukville as we know it alive then may it rest in peace. It's part of the HE strategy for Kampot.
