Amazon.com Inc (AMZN) Upsets Cambodians by Selling Angkor Wat Toilet Seat Covers & Floor Mats

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Somehow this just seems totlaly unacceptable to me. Real trailer trash souvenirs
Why is it unacceptable to you? Please explain. I'm having issues understanding why the Khmer are getting so butt hurt about this. It's just a toilet cover. it's not like people are gonna shit on it.

I know the Khmer don't have much to be proud of. I mean, let's face it, they don't have anything to show besides Angkor Wat. So instead of embracing the fact that people that have never visited Cambodia may consider purchasing something that represents Cambodia, why do they get pissed off?

The last time the Khmer had sandy vaginas was when some Thai company was selling drawers with Angkor Wat on them. Should the French get upset because some US company sells underwear with the Statue of Liberty on it? Should Donny sue the company that makes unflattering inflatables with his face on it? No. But Trump will sue.

And yes, it's an old people/ trailer trash thing. So?
Not really souvenirs since the items are sold on Amazon.

Khmer are chill people but they gotta get over themselves. Too much whining and bitching for the wrong reasons.
It is unacceptable because it is a religious and national symbol. Do you think anyone would approve if it was the church of the holy sepulchre in jerusalem being used as a toitet seat cover, or notre dame cathedral, or Buckingham palace or the Alamo or the American flag ?Certain things are very importnat to the people of a country and using them as toilet furniture is just plain ignorant and insulting
Funny thing is, I found toilet seat covers with Notre Dame, Buckingham Palace, Alamo, and the American flag. Amazon has got them all! I guess either everyone approves, or no one gives a flying f..k! And that, my friend, is exactly the kind of attitudes the Khmer should have in that kind of situations! It would prevent them from looking like a bunch of cry babies with nothing better to do.

Certain things are very important to people, that's a fact. However, most people know when something should be taken seriously and when it shouldn't. Common sense, you know... Involving the Cambodian Ambassador in this non-sense is another sign of the Khmer being waaayyy too sensitive over trivial issues. But then again I am expecting solid critical thinking skills from a population that pours hot molten lead over a bomb that failed to explode a few decades ago....
@Q
LOL, you sound upset about this. IMO, telling the Khmers to get over themselves, because what you think is more important than what they think, and generally insulting them and talking to them like a bunch of preschoolers will not change their minds. Neither will it convince them that you are right and they are wrong. This is Khmer culture, so they get to decide what's important for them and what's not.

Remember, not everyone thinks as you do on the subject of toilet seat covers. Opinions other than your own are also valid and worthy of respect.

I am low key salty! It's their culture, and they do get to decide what's important to them and what's not. That still doesn't give them the right to make their pinche ambassador tell the US government AND Amazon what can and can't be sold on a website they don't even have access to! Jeff Bezos is losing billions as we speak ffs! Give the man a break!
It's not about being wrong or right really. It's about admitting that they're being very hypocritical about this. In the end, it's about fairness.

My culture has been molded around the marketplace. Whether we like to admit it or not, capitalism is our religion. Does that mean that my ambassador should go on a vendetta because Sreyleak is selling fake Nikes, which will in turn decrease the company's revenues and prevent the creation of thousands of bullshit jobs (according to Graeber's definition)? Should Kanye West give his buddy Trump a call because the vast majority of Cambodian kids are rocking fake Yeezys?
Michael Jordan got into it with the Chinese a while ago over some copyright infringement issues. Did they stop producing fake Jordan products? Nope. So why should we take anyone's grievances into account when ours are simply being dismissed?

The toilet cover thing is just an excuse for a much bigger issue: Khmers get away with all kind of wrongful actions, but if we fart a bit too loud, we must get on our knees and apologize until the day we die. That's complete horse shit! At some point, they're gonna have to learn how to take it or else they'll be in for a rude awakening (breaking news: most visitors don't think Cambodia is all that crazy).
They get all antsy over some dumb toilet seat (and so do I). The shaky socio-economic condition of the country and the sharp decrease in European and North American tourists though? not so much smdh.

Like you said, we all have our own opinions. I respect you guys' opinions as much as I expect you to respect mine. Peace yall! :beer3:

Has there been a decrease in European and North American tourists though? I know there's been a sharp increase in Chinese tourists but I haven't seen any figures that suggest there have been decreases in other visitors.

I'm pretty sure that there are some figures here somewhere that suggest European visitors are down for 2019. If I have time and internet, I'll see if I can find them.

99% of trailer trash never left their home state, do people seriously think they know what Angkor Wat is, let alone buying a toilet seat with a pic of it on there to piss on? Maybe there's another demographic but I don't see many Budweiser swilling hillbillies rushing out to buy this.

Do these products even exist? The website seems to be using stock photos of bathrooms and then Photoshopping all sorts of random images on in the hopes that someone will order them and they'll run some up on their vinyl sticker printing machine. Who the hell puts stickers on their toilet anyway? It's trashy and unhygenic.

True that. And sure as eggs the khmers won't be buying.. The colonial masters have difficulty accessing amazon so methinks that leaves maybe other asian countries buying it for souvenir value following their recent trip? Somehow I think it would be too kitch for Brits, Europeans, Aussies and Canadians.

I've seen white girls at music festivals doing outrageous amounts of DMT and rolling downhill for days with similar tattoos... Why not on a toilet seat? :stir:
