Phnom Penh: After a meeting between the General of Immigration Department of the Ministry of Interior and the General of the Labor Department today, 1 March 2018 , the Department of Immigration has announced that all foreigners all over the country,whether they are working in factories, enterprises, institute or casinos, need to follow Cambodian immigration laws concerning work permits and to pay taxes.

According the general Sok Phal, Head of Immigration Department, there are 160,000 foreigners working in Cambodia, most of them are Chinese. However, many foreigners do not yet follow the immigration law and they work without a work permit.
The work permit fee for foreigners will be fixed at $100 per year.

More than 100,000 foreigners of about 160,000 working in Cambodia did not have work permits in 2017, according to figures announced during a meeting between the interior and labour ministries yesterday.

Seng Sakada, director general of the Labour Ministry’s general department of labour, said in the meeting that 160,077 foreigners from 93 countries were working in the Kingdom, adding 100,346 of the workers were Chinese nationals.

Mr Sakada said the rise in foreigners applying for work permits was remarkable, but said the majority of establishments employing foreigners were still not doing the paperwork.

“There were 102,102 foreigners who did not apply for work permits in 2017,” he said.

The previous fine for not having a work permit was about $2 per day, but the fine has increased to about $10 per day, according to Mr Sakada.

Why don’t they just raise the long term visa fee by $100 per year instead of messing with this work permit nonsense?

Because then the Department of Immigration would get loads more cash and the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training would get nothing.

Not to mention the tax department. WPs mean they can keep tabs on income earned by foreigners in Cambodia.

Exactly, territorial boundaries. When our company exports from PNH we have to make 5 separate payments (many without receipt) instead of just getting one invoice to pay.
