sure, because they are testing the waters, no network setup. Thanks PhucketRichard for saving me a lotta typing.OrangeDragon wrote:And the large party boat they booked for 3 days isn't Korean owned... it's owned by the same guy who had the big boat fire. A westerner.
Stuff like this is what fires up local money to speculate and bulldoze stuff or displace ppl and fill in lakes. Maybe islands you can't go to will be next.
A few years n some down the road, try and remember saying the above. Plus those lines about wanting to see the backpackers gone (you sounded like a few vocal ones from um...somewhere else I read).

Honestly the backpackers are quite parasitic here for the most part. Not only are they cheap, but their cheapness breeds resentment for all foreigners into the locals where anyone just looking for a the "right price" is instantly a cheap charlie. They do dumb shit, like spend a lot on drugs from motodops and tuktuks which creates drug gangs/etc. Its a relatively small area, so their impact is felt a lot more clearly than it is in Phnom Penh.
As for speculation, the islands are already mostly chinese owned now... and they seem to be keen on keeping them operating as is, because it's working. The main likely development locations are in places that really really need it honestly.

Yes, someone finally said it. Their is really no attraction to Phnom Penh. Its a tourist dead end. Filthy, crowded, and very few real attractions. There is the rivers, but no beach or swimming. Its probably the biggest city in the world with no mass transit system. The only reason I go there is when I can't buy something in Snooky and must travel the "Death Highway To Hell" or am flying to Singapore or Bangkok. I read where the city planners in PP where thinking of making a phony "China Town" as a tourist attraction. (BTW/ I don't like Bangkok either after 30+ years of having to travel through it.)
On the "Death Highway To Hell" comment. About a mile from my bungalow in Snooky is a police station with crashed trucks and bus's. Safe highway, no way! I do take a better bus nowadays, Giant Ibus, but I try not to look at the road ahead during the trip. The crashed trucks seem to be at the crash-yard forever, but they take the bus's away really fast I couldn't get a picture of the last crashed bus, maybe they take them away to piece back together with Bondo/paint and put them back on the PP/Snooky route. I wonder what the crash-yard looks like in PP?

I'll agree w/you on the "Highway of Death". IME, the over/under for head-ons per trip is about 4, but I like PP & go frequently. The last few years I've begun to enjoy it more than BKK. Lotsa good restaurants, bars, & consumables in the stores I can't get down here.

Having spent 40 years of my life in Africa, I can tell you that the quickest way to screw up any beautiful spot on earth is to develop it.
Added to that is the fact that I don't consider Sinville to be especially beautiful, but after 5 hours on a bus from Phnom Penh, just about anything looks beautiful.
I agree with the other poster, Phnom Penh is a shithole.

Why is it nicknamed 'Highway of Death?' The highway from PP to SHV is one of the best roads I've seen in Cambodia.

But it has a lot of accidents... in part because it's such a nice road people can go much faster on it.flying chicken wrote:Why is it nicknamed 'Highway of Death?' The highway from PP to SHV is one of the best roads I've seen in Cambodia.
We should call the highway to Siem Reap the "Highway of Spinal Compression."

Yea, once past Kompong Thom the road is complete shit (SR > PP), and the traffic jam is a nightmare when entering and exiting PP esp in the evening.OrangeDragon wrote:
